Polanyi argued the primacy of the social over individuals and "embeddedness" of all economic action in the whole society's operation. Thus, according to him, the economy of whole society has never been organized into the system "disembedded" from whole society such as market system and markets in history have been nothing else than an accessory to whole economic system. However, modern West saw the great changing. The absolute state re-organized its economy into the competitive market in national scale, and further, industrial revolution occurring in eighteenth century drove human history into the "Machine Age". In Machine Age, not a man but a machine came to be a subject of production. The principle re-organized society into self-regulating market. Based on the Commodity Fiction that man, land and money were commodities, it attained social 3equilibrium by the self regulating function through laissez-faire market's clearing. but self-regulating market's operation might cause the social beings to suffer time-spatial insecurity, and destroy the whole society. Thus, the social beings must of necessity strive to self-protection of society and this shaped the aspects of class struggle in 19th century. In this course, there necessarily emerged the "double movement" which resulted from the contradiction of self regulting market with self-protection of society. And as its corollary, I will stress, this double movement reinforced the state in each direction and the modern nation-state became fortified strongholds. This contradictory "double movement" shaped the political economic order of all the world. the 19th century's world order that generated the self-regulating market on world's scale can be characterized as historical blocunder liberal bourgeoisie hegemony.

폴라니에 의하면 역사적으로 사회는 항상 개인에 대해 선차성을 갖는 것이 었다. 따라서 모든 경제 활동은 전체 사회 작동에 묻어들어가 있는 것이었다. 따라서 시장제도와 같이 전체 사회에서 튀어나와 있는 제도로 전체 사회의 경 제가 조직되는 경우는 없었으며, 역사적으로 존재했던 시장은 전체 사회 경제 작동에 있어 항상 부수적인 존재에 불과했다는 것이다. 그러나 근대 서구 사회 에서 큰 변화가 일어났다. 절대주의 국가는 자신의 경제를 전국적 규모의 경쟁 적 성격의 시장으로 조직하기 시작했던 것이다. 게다가 18세기에 시작된 산업 혁명은 인류 역사를 ‘기계제 생산’의 시대로 돌입하게 하였던 것이다. 기계제 생산에서는 인간 및 사회가 아닌 기계가 생산의 주체가 된다. 이에 근간한 사회의 재조직은 자기 조정 시장을 중심으로 이루어지게 된다. 인간, 토지, 화폐가 모두 상품이라는 상품 허구에 기반하여, 자유 방임적 시장의 시 장 청산을 통한 가격의 자기 조정 기능에 기반하여, 자유방임적 시장의 시장 청산을 통한 가격의 자기 조정 기능에 의해 사회적 균형을 달성하도록 하는 것이다. 그러나, 이러한 자기 조정 시장의 작동은 사회적 존재의 시간-공간적 불안정을 초래하는 것으로서, 사회 전체의 파괴를 낳을 수 있는 것이었다. 이 에 사회적 존재들은 필연적으로 사회의 자기 보호운동을 일으키게 되며 이는 19세기의 계급투쟁의 성격을 규정하는 것이었다. 이리하여 시장 사회 내에는 자기 조정 시장의 작동과 이에 맞서는 사회의 자기 보호 운동이라는 모순적인 ‘이중적 운동’이 필연적으로 생겨나게 된다. 주목할 것은, 이러한 이중적 운동 각각은 각각의 방향에서 국가를 강화시키는 결과를 낳아 그 결과 근대의 민족 국가는 견고한 단위로 강화되었다. 이러한 모순적 이중적 운동은 전 세계의 정치 경제 질서를 규정해버리는 것이기도 하였다. 세계적 차원의 자기 조정 시장을 낳은 19세기 전반기의 질서 는 세계적 차원에서의 보수적 부르조아지 헤게모니 하의 ‘역사적 블록’의 성격 을 갖는 것이었다.
