Social studies is the subject which makes it possible for students to be equipped with accurate awareness of social phenomena and the quality as a democratic citizen. Considering the character of such a subject, it might be important for social textbooks to avoid selecting and organizing the contents that could inspire a stereotype or prejudice into students. However, looking at the present composition of the contents about a city and a village, most of the contents are described with focus on a city, whereas a village is described on the basis of exposing a city. This excludes the diversity of a city and a village, and gets the characteristics, or value of a city space and village space to be lost. Moreover, the descriptive method of a city and a village in a dichotomous way reproduces the two as a space of superiority and inferiority, and makes student perceive the two as a disrupted space as well. Of course, the elementary social studies textbooks describe a city and a village as a space for interaction with the two functionally connected. However, the awareness that the two spaces are the ones having different landscapes, functions, value and tradition will have to be preceded before describing the content that the two spaces are connected with each other.

사회과는 사회 현상을 정확하게 인식하고 민주시민으로서의 자질을 갖추도록 하는 교과이다. 이러한 교과의 성격을 고려할 때 사회과교과서는 학생들에게 고정관념이나 편견을 심어줄 수 있는 내용을 선정·조직하지 않는 것이 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 현재 도시와 촌락에 대한 내용의 구성을 보면 내용의 대부분이 도시를 중심으로 기술되고 있으며, 도시를 드러내는 기준으로 촌락을 기술하고 있다. 이는 도시와 촌락의 다양성을 배제하고 도시 공간과 촌락 공간이 가지는 특성이나 가치를 상실하게 만든다. 또한 도시와 촌락을 이분법적으로 기술하는 방식은 그 둘을 우열의 공간으로 재현하고 단절적인 공간으로 인식하게 만들기도 한다. 물론 초등 사회과교과서에서는 도시와 촌락이 기능적으로 연결되어 상호작용하는 공간으로 기술하고 있다. 그러나 두 공간이 상호 연결되어 있다는 내용 기술에 앞서 두 공간이 서로 다른 경관과 기능, 가치와 전통을 가진 공간이라는 인식이 선행되어야 할 것이다.
