Despite the general findings that a positive association exists between entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and performance of the firm, the evidence is not consistent, and there is wide variation in the magnitude of the reported impact. Researchers make the case that the examination of a simple bivariate link, often with constrained methods, provides an inadequate assessment of this focal relationship. Accordingly, scholars have called for wide-ranging modeling of the impact of EO on firm performance. We respond to this call by testing a comprehensive, mediational model, with a multi-theoretic approach. By so doing, research result shows that a highly integrated and implementation of entrepreneurial orientation will impact on technological capabilities and in turn leverage firm performance. Revising relevant survey instruments for the benefit of investigating this relationship in Nigerian manufacturing SMEs was carried out due to scant literature in such direction and exploring greater insights in the relationship between EO, technological capabilities and firm performance is inevitable. Therefore, to address this concern, this study developed a concept facilitating an atmosphere where the relationship between Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and performance is mediated by technological capabilities. This in turn leads to improved performance vis-à-vis cost reduction, improved production quality and increased innovative capability. The results support conceptualization and findings that proper implementation of technological capabilities mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance in the context of manufacturing SMEs.

기업가적 성향과 기업성과의 관계에 대한 기존연구의 결과는 다소 혼란스럽다. 몇몇 연구는 직접적인 유의한 영향관계를, 또 일부 연구는 유의하지 못한 결과를 각각 제시하고 있다. 이러한 연구결과의 혼재에 대해서 기업가적 성향 연구가 채택하는 변수들이 매우 제한적으로 채택되었기 때문이며, 또한 기업가적 성향과 기업성과의 영향관계를 제약하는 영향력 검증이 필요하다는 의견이 제시되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 다양한 이론적 접근을 통해 기존 연구에서의 제한적 측정방식을 수정하여 포괄적인 기업가적 성향 변수를 채택, 측정하고 기업성과의 영향관계를 파악하고자 하였다. 또한 기업가적 성향과 기업성과의 영향관계에서 기술역량의 매개역할을 구조방정식 모형을 통해 검증함으로써 보다 통합적이고 현실적인 실증연구를 수행하였다. 개발도상국인 나이지리아의 제조중소기업을 대상으로 기업가적 성향, 기술역량, 기업성과의 통합적 영향관계를 검증하는 실증연구를 수행한 결과, 기업가적 성향은 원가절감, 품질향상, 혁신역량으로 구성되는 기술역량을 매개로 기업성과 증진에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 있음을 밝혀졌다. 이러한 연구결과에 대한 시사점과 향후 연구를 위한 제안도 함께 논의하였다.
