Hyeondeok is one of the representative writers of Incheon. He faced a tough life after he defected to the North Korea in 1950. He wrote only few works mainly in early 1950 and early 1960. He did not published any works during 8 years between 1950 and 1960. In this study, ｢Cultural work in the North Korean people’s army boosts soldier’ morale｣ written in 1953 and ｢Exterminate the crazy dog｣ written in 1961 will be introduced. ｢Cultural work in the North Korean people’s army boosts soldier’ morale｣ is a field report. The work has three meanings. First, it proves that Hyeondeok actually served in a war. Second, it shows situation of the North Korea’s troop orientation and training literature. Third, it reflects contents and system of cultural work in North Korea. So this work is primary source of war period which is very rare. ｢Exterminate the crazy dog｣ takes the form of letter. It also has three meanings. First, it is a good example of a form of letter which was used for persuasion and demagogy in the North Korea. Second, it is a political writing aiming instigation of the South Korea. Third, the work shows Hyeondeok‘s effort interiorization of socialist. Nevertheless, his effort does not seem to be successful. Hyeondeok‘s life and literature after defection to North Korea is not so well known. But two works introduced in this study partly show his life and literature after defection. Further information can be discovered by researchers’ continuous effort.

인천 지역을 대표하는 작가 가운데 한 사람이 현덕이다. 그는 1950년 월북한 뒤 평안한 삶을 누린 것 같지는 않다. 발표 작품 수가 많지 않을 뿐 아니라, 그들 또한 월북 초기인 1950년대 초와 1960년 초에 몰려 있다. 그 사이 여덟 해 동안은 작품 발표를 볼 수 없다. 이런 가운데 글쓴이는 1953년에 쓴와 1961년에 쓴 ｢미친개를 박멸하라｣를 발굴, 이 글을 통해 널리 소개하고자 했다. ｢조선인민군 부대 내 군중문화사업은 전선용사들의 사기를 더욱 고무한다｣는 현지 보고문이다. 이 글이 지닌 의의는 세 가지다. 첫째, 현덕의 전쟁기 종군 활동을 실증해 주는 1차 자료다. 둘째, 전쟁기 세 해 동안 심리전의 하나로 이루어졌던 남북한 정훈문학의 북한 쪽 상황을 알려 준다. 셋째, 광복 뒤부터 북한에서 이루어졌던 군중문화사업의 내용과 체계를 알게 해 주는 길라잡이다. 따라서 앞의 글은 북한으로서도 보기 드문 전쟁기 1차 사료인 셈이다. ｢미친개를 박멸하라｣는 편지 형식이다. 이 글이 지닌 의의는 세 가지다. 첫째, 북한의 문필 형식 가운데서 구호, 호소와 함께 설득, 선동 담론으로 중요하게 쓰이는 편지의 좋은 본보기다. 둘째, 남한을 향한 직접적인 정치 선동을 겨냥한 정치적 언론문이다. 셋째, 북한 사회주의 체제 건설과 집단화 속에서 현덕이 애썼을 체제 내화의 노력을 엿보게 한다. 그럼에도 그의 노력이 성공적으로 이루어진 것같지는 않다. 작가 현덕의 재북 시기 삶과 문학에 대해서는 아직까지 밝혀진 것보다 밝혀지지 않은 것이 더 많다. 이런 가운데서 서로 다른 시기에 발표된 글이지만 그의 삶과 문학의 양상을 알려 주는 사료가 이 글에서 소개한 두 작품이다. 앞으로 연구자의 노력에 따라서 새로운 사실을 더 밝혀낼 수 있을 것이다.
