日本の年中行事における「負の霊的存在」 の概念についての一考察 ‒ 境界との関わりを中心に ‒
A discussion on the concept of monsters in the Japanese Annual Events - Focusing on the relationship with the boundary -
This study aims to clearly distinguish divinities between visiting deities and evildoing deities by analyzing ‘Kotoyoka’ of houses and villages. Through this, it further aims to better clarify the relationship between annual events and monsters. First of all, it was considered that compound words such as ‘one-eyed goddess of small-pox’ or ‘one-eyed ghost’ symbolically represent the transition of the guardian spirit of mountain into evil ghost. In terms of rites theory, the boundary is deemed a space where deities who can eliminate misfortunes are greeted. In the folk religion, since people are sensitive to the awareness of such space (i.e. boundary), they perform rites of greeting and sending off deities. Then, given that misfortunes are based on the spirits of the dead, greeting deities is for subduing disasters inherent in the village while sending off deities is for expelling misfortune inherent in the village to the outside.
