The purpose of this study is to discuss the significance of the trend and challenges of character education research since Government announced character education strengthening means in the comprehensive policy to eradicate school violence in 2012. Since the 1995. 5.31 education reform in the state-level national policy on character education, the policies and practices of the national level for character education didn’t persist consistently. As in 2012 once again character education strengthening policy as a fundamental alternative to the School Violence Prevention released, studies on character education has increased that diagnosis of causes of the failure of past character education and suggest the improvements of them. This study analyzed conceptual confusion on character education and the measures in order to support character education of family, school and community. This study proposes three achievements and challenges of humanity education enabled. First, despite the consensus-based conceptual disagreement about the importance of an ethical aspect of moral personality education and the competency as an element of character education. Second, the test tool that can diagnose the status of the character of the youth was developed. the research reported youth development characteristics and environmental factors causing the individual difference of character. Third, Research to determine the causes of lowering the effective character education as well as research have been made for support measures to improve them. These achievements are encouraging but there remain four challenges for improving the effectiveness of character education. First, the agreement on the criteria and procedures for the selection of the core competencies of virtue and humanity are required. Second, in order to develop a scan tool to diagnose the situation of young people with accurate research on the nature and definition of virtue and self-report scale capacity addition it is necessary to develop a diagnostic tool by parents or teachers. Third, diagnosis of the effectiveness of character education programs should be based on scientific research, school-based unit of character education should be practiced. Finally, Efforts to raise the moral climate of society and strengthen character education in the home and are parallel.

본 연구의 목적은 2012년 학교폭력 근절종합 대책 방안에서 인성교육 강화 방침이 발표 된 이후 인성교육 연구결과들을 중심으로 인성교육 연구의 동향과 의의를 논의하는 것이다. 1995년 5. 31 교육개혁 이래 인성교육에 대한 국가수준의 정책과 실행의지는 시기에 따라 변화를 거듭하였다. 2012년 학교폭력 예방의 근본적 대안으로서 다시 한번 인성교육 강화가 발표되면서 과거 인성교육의 실패원인을 진단하고 개선방향을 제안하는 연구들이 증가하였다. 이에 본 연구는 인성교육에 관한 중요한 정책연구들을 중심으로 인성 및 인성교육에 관한 개념적 혼란과 합의, 가정․학교․사회 수준에서 제안된 인성교육 활성화 방안을 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 인성교육 활성화의 세 가지 성과와 과제를 제안하고 있다. 첫째, 인성교육에 대한 개념적 불일치에도 불구하고 도덕적 성품교육으로서의 윤리적 측면과 인성의 요소로서 역량의 중요성에 대한 합의기반이 조성되었다. 둘째, 청소년의 인성의 실태를 진단할 수 있는 검사도구가 개발되었으며, 청소년의 발달 특성 및 청소년이 인식하는 결핍요소, 청소년 인성의 개인차를 유발하는 환경 변인들이 밝혀졌다. 셋째, 인성교육의 효과를 낮추는 가정-학교-사회의 원인을 규명하는 연구는 물론 이를 개선하기 위한 연구들이 이뤄졌다. 이러한 성과는 고무적이지만 인성교육의 실효성을 높이기 위한 노력이 지속되어야 하며 인성교육의 이론적 토대 확립과 인성교육을 위한 내실화를 위한 과제를 제안하였다.
