This study provides a qualitative research that explores the relationship between their artistic creation and the self-consciousness of artists. Our research attempts to establish the foundations on art psychology which provides incentives necessary in art creation. In order to capture the aforementioned relationship, we investigated artists’ life with Essentialist portraiture. Essentialist portraiture can be considered as the most appropriate research method in a sense that it captures the essential aspect of artists’ overall life. The result of this study shows the followings. By means of their private self-consciousness, artists reflect on their lives, elaborate their ideas and make expressionistic theme of their arts and to elaborate thoughts. And public self-consciousness forms social philosophy and world view through which artists shapes the social network for his artistic life and communicate through a socially critical theme. In other words, artists’ idea shaped by their private and public self-consciousness provides a rich artistic background in building a subject of satire or social work, which are reflected within their works. The result of this study would be valuable for art psychological materials for teaching and learning methods that help to cultivate creative motivation for students at the school.

이 글은 예술가의 자의식이 예술창작에 있어 어떠한 관계를 갖는가를 탐색하기 위한 질적 연구이다. 예술가의 삶 속에서 갖게 되는 사적 혹은 공적 자의식이 그들의 예술창작과 어떠한 관계를 지니고 있는지 초상화법을 통해 살펴보고, 예술교육에서 창작의 동기유발에 필요한 예술심리학적 토대를 마련하고자 한다. 인간의 본질적인 면을 연구 대상으로 삼는 초상화법은 예술가의 총체적인 삶을 조망하고, 나아가 예술가의 내면에 존재하는 자의식의 발현이 어떻게 예술창작 활동과 관계되고 있는지를 탐구하고자 하는 본 연구에 가장 적합한 연구 방법이라 생각되었다. 예술에 종사하며 예술 작품을 통해 자신의 영역을 만들어가는 예술가에게 예술창작은 삶이요, 곧 “존재 이유”이다. 본 연구를 통해, 예술가의 사적 자의식은 자신의 삶을 성찰하고 자신을 판단하는 기준으로써 정서적 민감성에 관계하며 작품 속에 표현주의적 주제를 형성하는데 관계함을 알 수 있었다. 아울러 공적 자의식은 예술적 삶을 살아가기 위한 타인과의 관계망 설정을 위한 사회관과 세계관을 형성하며 작품을 통해 사회 비판적 주제로 소통하는 데 관계하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 즉, 자의식을 바탕으로 형성된 예술가의 사상은 작품 속에 반영되어 사회 풍자나 작품의 주제를 형성해 나가는 데 풍부한 예술적 바탕을 제공함을 알 수 있었다. 자의식이 예술가의 예술창작에 일련의 동기가 되고 자극 요소로 기능하며, 예술가를 끊임없이 예술로 끌어내 창작의 사상적 배경과 관계되고 있다는 점은 학교 현장에서 아동의 창작 동기를 끌어내고 사고의 배경을 넓혀주는 요소로써 교수ㆍ학습 방법 구안에 의미 있는 예술심리학적 자료가 될 것이라 생각한다.
