This study is aimed at elucidating anti-art characteristics of the early Butoh, an avant-garde form of Japanese dance theatre. We first discuss the conceptual features of an avant-garde art, which arose in the early 20th century in Europe, as well as socio- cultural and artistic backgrounds and settings, which gave birth to the Butoh and then inspect the cental ideas of its two key founders Hijikata Tatsumi and Ohno Kazuo. The three major features of the art form include (i) formlessness, resisting fixed and codified techniques, (ii) distressful and grotesque imagery through crude physical gestures and motions, and (iii) pursuit of absolute freedom, annihilating self through otherness inside self and transcendental soul. Conclusion is that the early Butoh is formalized with ugliness and deconstruction, the anti-art factors featuring the dead, the soul of the sufferer from distress, and inner voice of otherness inside self. Understanding aesthetic and theatre roots of Butoh, the internationally recognized modern dance, will shed light on creating a unique form and style of Korean dance.

본 연구는 일본 초기 부토의 전위적 요소인 ‘반예술’의 특징을 밝히는 데 그 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 20세기 초, 유럽에 등장한 ‘반예술’의 개념과 특징에 대해 다뤘고, 부토가 등장한 사회문화적, 예술적 배경과 부토의 선구 자적 인물인 히치가타 타츠미와 오노 가즈오의 사상을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 초기 부토의 반예술적 특징은 정해 진 테크닉에 의존하지 않는 무형식과 추하고 왜곡된 혐오감을 불러일으키는 신체움직임, 그리고 초월적 영혼과 ‘자기’안의 타자의 영혼에 의해 ‘자기’가 소멸된 절대 자유추구에서 발견할 수 있다. 이러한 초기 부토는 ‘죽은 자’, ‘고통 안에서 괴로워하고 있는 영혼’ 그리고 ‘자기 안의 또 다른 타자의 내면의 목소리’를 통한 ‘반예술’적 요 소인 추함과 파괴를 움직임으로 형식화했다. 독자적 현대무용으로 세계적으로 인정받는 이러한 부토의 표현 및 예술사상에 대한 뿌리의 이해는 한국의 현대춤에 시사점을 줄 수 있다.
