This paper is a preliminary study for comprehensive research about Chinese-Latin dictionary Systema Phoneticum Scripturae Sinicae(字聲綱目), which was published in Macau in 1841 and currently is at the Old&Rare Books Archive of Seoul National University Library. An autograph, signed “Berneux, miss. ap.” on the front flap of the inner cover, suggests a possibility that the owner of this book was bishop St. Siméon-François Berneux(1814~1866), who was the 4th vicar apostolic of Joseon. Until now, there has been no report about this dictionary in Korean academia and no preceding in-depth study in Chinese academia either. The author of this book, Joseph-Marie Callery(1810~1862), was a missionary of Missions Étrangères de Paris. After failing to enter Joseon, he stayed in Macau and spent 6 years compiling the dictionary. The Latin title, meaning ‘phonetic system of Chinese character’, and the Chinese title 字聲綱目, meaning ‘work about phonetic value[聲] of character[字]’, show that the author aimed to demonstrate the Chinese character is phonogram. For this reason, the author, unlike conventional dictionary, categorized and arranged 12,753 of Chinese characters by using his own 1,040 of so-called ‘fundmentafles litterae’, which means phonetic radical(聲符). Contrary to ‘Western word-Chinse(character)’ order in former dictionary by westerner, the author, consequently, adopted reversed order in his dictionary. In addition, this dictionary includes the first scholarly study, done by westerner, on phonetic radicals of Chinese characters as well. In the “Introduction”, the author reviews the earlier history of Chinese lexicography and understandings of Chinese characters. It implies that this book is not only a dictionary, but a research on the history of modern science about Chinese characters, appeared in the West. In this regard, this dictionary went much further from how to articulate the sound—comprehensible to westerner--of Chinese character, opened door to a significant phase of how to reorganize Chinese characters phonetically. On these premises, I argue that this book, far beyond bilingual dictionary that is merely a means of learning foreign language, is academically improved dictionary in the true sense of the word. Therefore, 字聲綱目 is a historical watershed for bilingual dictionary.

이 글은 1841년 마카오에서 간행된 중국어-라틴어 사전 《자성강목(字聲綱目: Systema Phoneticum Scripturae Sinicae)》에 대한 기초 조사 보고이다. 필자는 현재 서울대학교 중앙도서관 고문헌자료실에 소장 중인 판본을 대상으로 분석 작업을 수행하였다. 사전의 라틴어 제목은 ‘중국문자의 음성 체계’라는 뜻이고, 중국어 제목인 ‘字聲綱目’은‘ 글자[字]의 소리[聲]에 대한 저술’이라는 뜻이다. 이 사전의 저자는 칼레리(Joseph-Marie Callery)로 파리외방선교회 소속 선교사였다. 이 사전은 서양인이 편찬한 이중어 사전 중 ‘견습적’ 단계서 벗어나 있는, 학술적 차원에서 한층 제고된 ‘사전다운 사전’이다. 또한 이 사전은, 서구인이 한자의 성부(聲符)를 전문적으로 연구한 최초의 저술이다. 그는 한자가 표음문자체계임을 입증하기 위해 이 사전을 간행했다고 밝혔다. 이를 위해 칼레리는 1,040자에 달하는 ‘기본글자’라는 성부를 고안하였고, 이를 중심으로 12,753자에 이르는 한자를 체계적으로 분류하고 배열하였다. 곧 기존 사전처럼 부수글자를 기축으로 사전을 구성하지 않았는데, 이는 《자성강목》이 이중어 사전 역사의 새로운 장을 열었음을 말해준다. 이 글은 이러한 역사적 의의를 지닌 《자성강목》의 체례와 특징 가운데 주요사항을 소개한 글이다.
