The purpose of this study was to explore the process of career and employment preparation, in which college students’ beliefs on the importance of English ability was strengthened and how their efforts to improve English ability were engaged. Youth employ- ment rate has been decreased every year since 2011 and the issue related with youth unemployment has been emerged as one of the most critical concerns throughout the society. Further, high rate of youth college entrance over 70% has enhanced the difficulties for the college degree holders to be employed. In this circumstance, college students have put more and more efforts to raise their employability, so-called SPEC. Meanwhile, English ability is considered as one of the most important aspects of the SPEC, which is not directly related with future job competence. In-depth interview was adopted as a research method. The number of interview participants was 19, who were 4 year-college students in Seoul, Metropolitan area and Provinces. Their most concerned issue during the college years was about career plan and employment preparation. In this process, they pointed out that English ability was the most significant task to achieve. They spent a lot of time, efforts, and costs to improve English ability and to achieve certified results of English. This trend was commonly revealed through all year groups and areas. Freshmen and sophomores who have relatively enough time for job preparation have recognized the importance of English by emphasis of seniors and professors. And they internalized the importance of English ability by experiencing advantages resulted from English excellence. In terms of English ability, their interests on improving TOEIC scores were very desperate. Although companies put less weight on TOEIC score, they were struggling to get higher scores which were implicitly standardized among themselves. Further, college students planned exchange student program or study abroad in order to develop English ability. However, it took a lot of time and cost for studying abroad and even studying TOEIC. Even pessimistic perception was shown that this job preparation process has represented the gap between social classes and further different job results. Based on the result of this study, I suggested several implications for career course education. First, through career education for youth, life long career plans are needed to be made and related college majors should be chosen. Second, proper career education programs for college students are needed to be developed and provided. Third, companies and employers are required to provide clear employment selection criteria and cases for college students not to consume their time, energy and money to prepare for their jobs exceedingly.

이 연구에서는 대학생들의 진로 및 취업 준비 과정에서 영어 능력 향상에 대한 인식이 강화되는 과정과 영어능력 향상을 위한 노력 양상에 대하여 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구방법은 심층면접을 사용하였으며, 서울, 수도권, 지방의 4년제와 대학에 재학 중인 대학생 19명이 면접에 참여하였다. 대학생들의 대학 재학 중 가장 큰 고민과 관심사는 진로 및 취업준비이며, 이 과정에서 영어능력 향상을 가장 중요한 당면과제로 꼽고 있었다. 영어 능력 향상과 입증을 위하여 많은 시간, 노력, 비용을 들이고 있으며, 이러한 경향은 학년이나 지역에 상관없이 나타나고 있다. 당장 취업 준비에 여유가 있는 1, 2학년의 경우 선배나 교수 등 주변인으로부터 막연히 영어의 중요성에 대한 강조를 듣고 인식하게 된다. 그리고 직접적으로 영어 능력을 통해 비교 우위를 체감하는 과정에서도 영어 실력 및 인증 점수의 중요성에 대해 인식하게 된다. 대학생들의 영어 능력입증과 관련하여 토익점수의 향상에 대한 관심은 무척 높은 것으로 나타났다. 토익 점수에 대한 기업의 중요성 부여 정도가 낮음에도 불구하고 대학생들은 암묵적으로 정해놓은 토익 고득점 수준에 도달하기 위해 고군분투하고 있었다. 이에 영어능력 입증을 위해서 대학생들은 어학연수나 교환학생 등 영어권 환경에서의 체류를 계획하고 있었다. 하지만, 영어권 체류 및 토익 점수 향상을 위해서는 경제적 시간적 비용 부담을 수반하게 되며, 사회경제적 격차는 취업 준비과정과 취업 결과에도 반영될 것이라는 비관적 인식을 보이고 있었다. 끝으로 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 대학생들의 진로교육 지원 방안과 관련한 몇 가지 시사점을 제시하였다. 첫째는 청소년기의 진로교육을 통해 전반적인 생애진로 설계와 관련된 대학 입학과 전공선택이 이루어져야 한다는 점이다. 둘째는 대학생들을 대상으로 하는 진로교육 프로그램의 내실화가 이루어져야 한다. 셋째는 기업 등 채용 주체들이 채용 기준과 사례들에 대하여 투명하게 제시하여햐 할 필요가 있음을 제언하고 있다.
