American education gives rise to public discussion focusing on secondary schools. Therefore the subject of American educational reform is secondary education and teachers' education.
The following points are a summary of educational reformative policies established recently by American Educational Administrations and the Board of Education in each state government.
First, people in the influential class who insist on the necessity of educational reform are not directors in the educational field but politicians, industrialists and non educational leading class.
Second, men of light and leading in the American society recognize more seriously the necessity of sloving the education problems first to increase national power.
Third, to reform the teacher' education, a long-term strategy is necessary and all sorts of people should have the common awareness that they need to cooperate.
Fourth, improving teachers' quality and reforming the teaching method are focused.
Fifth, school days and school hours are expanded. (Before: 180 days Now: 190-200 days)
Sixth, credits for completion of Math and Science are highly expanded.
Seventh, they make every effort to amend curriculums of primary and secondary schools.
Eighth, they hasten the reinforcement of the basis of entrance into colleges.

University, educational facilities of states and communities, private organizations and persons related to schools made a federation and manage it to propel thc lasks mentioned above successfully.

미국 문화의 대표적인 구성 요소로는 개인주의， 자본주의， 자유 민주주의， 청교도주의， 개척주의， 실용주의 등을 생각할 수 있다． 그러나 이러한 다민족 문화는 오늘날 정치적， 사회적으로 불안의 요인이 되고 있을뿐만 아니라 교육에 있어서도 상당한 문제와 갈등을 표출하고 있는 것이 사실이다． 미국의 교육 개혁은 국가적 위기 의식이 고조되면서부터 더욱 시도되었다． 소련에 자극을 받은 미국은 1960년대부터 교육 개혁을 추진하여 1980년대에 이르러서는 선진국의 교육과 미국의 교육을 비교 분석하여 미국 교육의 부정적인 측면을 부각시키고 이에 대한 해결책으로 수월성을 추구하는 교육 개혁의 필요성을 역설하였다． 그 중에서도 교사의 양성과 전문성 확보 방안은 더욱 중요한 과제로 부각되었다． 본 연구는 우리나라 교육에 직접 영향을 미치고 있는 미국 교육의 형성 배경， 학교 교육， 교사 교육을 비롯한 교육 개혁의 최근 동향을 살펴보고 한국 교육 개혁에 대한 시사점을 제시하려는데 목적이 있다.
