In Korean poetry in the 1980s, the foundation of poetic imagination was the question how to overcome the given reality. The poetic logic behind resisting a political situation, or in other words, an oppressive but obscure entity, was to position oneself in the most miserable situation. The “internalization of a sense of misery” was the most important poetic methodology to the 1980s poet, and such methodology was derived from an awareness of one’s situation, that there is no way out, no exit. Realism arises from such awareness of one’s situation. Realism is not so much a desire to revolutionize reality but rather a psychological structure twisted and distorted by reality, a way to understand real problems by transposing them as one’s own, and thus realism falls under the realm of modernism. But it also implies a resistance to accepting life as it is, and thus realism can be considered to be critical modernism. Such methodology was the logical structure underlying the subconscious of poets and their poetry in the 1980s. Such phenomenon is represented in the works of Hwang Ji Woo, Kim Myeong In, Jeong Ho Seung, Choi Seung Ho, Kim Ji Ha, etc., and these poets are frequently noted for clearly portraying the political nature of poetry. However, the political nature of poetry must be understood from an aesthetic perspective as the rendering of politics into a sensation, and the aesthetic accomplishment of poetry in the 1980s was that a horizon of rendering politics into a sensation within the realm of critical modernism was proposed, and that is where the significance of poetry in the 1980s in the history of literature can be found.

1980년대의 한국시는 주어진 현실을 극복하는 방법론 모색에 시적 상상력의 근간을 두었다. 정치적 상황의 문제 즉, 억압적이지만 분명하게 보이지 않는 실체에 대항하는 시적 논리는 자신을 가장 불행한 상황에 위치시키는 방법이었다. 가령 광주항쟁으로 대표되는 한국 사회의 비극적 상황은 그 실체 규명에 대한 정치적·사회적 노력도 이루어졌지만, 시인에게는 보편적 상실감으로 치환되는 경향이 강했다. ‘님이 침묵하는 시대’의 서정성이란 역사적 상처를 개인의 차원에서 이해하려는 심리적 고투 혹은 열망을 의미한다. 시 구성상의 방법론에서 볼 때 ‘불행의식의 내면화’는 1980년대 시인에게 가장 중요한 원리였다. 이는 밖으로 나갈 수 없음, 출구가 없다는 상황인식으로 확장된다. 현실주의란 이같은 판단에서 비롯된 다. 1980년대의 현실주의는 현실을 변혁하고자 하는 욕망이 아니라 현실의 영향 으로부터 파생된 내면적 갈등, 진실성을 향한 개진의 욕망, 현실 문제를 자신의 문제로 치환하려는 방법이라는 점에서 모더니즘의 범주이고 동시에 삶을 주어진 그대로는 수용할 수 없다는 저항을 내포하고 있어 비판적 모더니즘이라고 규정할 수 있다. 이와 같은 방법이 1980년대 시와 시인들의 무의식을 형성하는 논리 구조였다. 황지우·김명인·정호승·최승호·김지하 등은 시의 정치성을 극명하게 보여준 시인으로 판단된다. 시의 정치성이란 심미적 관점에서 ‘정치의 감각화’라는 개념으로 이해되어야 하며, 1980년대 시의 미적 성취는 비판적 모더니즘의 범주 내에서 ‘정치의 감각화’라는 지평을 제시했다는 점에서 문학사적 의미를 찾을 수있다.
