Currently, one of the hottest study subjects in the use of liberal arts and sociology is 'urban regeneration'. There may be a difference in what are expressed as ‘regional regeneration’, ‘creative city’, ‘soft city’, ‘making of the historical and cultural street’, ‘village making’ and the like according to competent regions. But it can be said that they pursue the same direction in a broad sense. But as well presented in the intention of planning the academic conference, it can be pointed out that there is a problem that these projects are implemented from an excessively urban․engineering position. Accordingly, for these attempts to be successful, their linkage with liberal arts, among other things, should continually be kept at each stage. In this sense, this task requires the role of liberal-arts academicians and their responsibility as well. This study attempted to present the role of liberal arts to extend them to the urban regeneration project and ultimately to pursue the direction of sustainable urban regeneration that can keep the quality of life. And it attempted to present the role and direction of liberal arts in the urban regeneration project as three forces such as ① the force of facts, ② the force of the archetype and context and ③ the force of reinterpretation and convergence by reference to existing previous studies.

현재 인문학 및 사회학의 활용 분야에 있어 가장 뜨거운 연구주제 중의 하나는 ‘도시재생’이다. 흔히 ‘지역재생’, ‘창조도시’, ‘소프트시티’, ‘역사문화 거리조성’, ‘마을만들기’ 등으로 표현되는 것들은 비록 대상 지역의 차이는 있지만, 크게 보면 같은 방향을 추구하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 본 학술대회의 기획의도에서 제시되었듯이, 이러한 사업들이 지나치게 都市․工學的인 입장에서 진행되고 있다는 문제점을 지적할 수 있다. 따라서 이러한 시도들이 성공할 수 있으려면, 무엇보다 인문학과의 연계가 각 단계마다 지속적으로 관철되어야 한다. 이러한 과제는 인문학자의 역할을 요청하는 것이면서, 또한 인문학자의 책임을 수반하는 것이기도 하다. 본 글에서는 도시재생사업에 있어 인문학의 역할을 제시하여 지속 가능한 도시재생의 방향의 일단을 모색해 보고자 하였다. 기존 선행 연구업적을 참고하면서, 필자는 도시재생사업에 있어 인문학의 역할과 방향을 ①팩트(Fact)의 힘, ②원형(Archetype)과 맥락(Context)의 힘, ③재해석(Reinterpretation)과 융합(Convergence)의 힘의 3가지로 제시해 보았다.
