This study discusses the functions and reassigning the number of the wooden printing blocks of the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa. Major findings are as follows: First, in Chapter Two, it was discussed that the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa had its roots in the Jinbyong Tripitaka Koreana, that is, the First Edition of Tripitaka Koreana which helped defend Goryeo from the war. Therefore, it was confirmed that the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa had been carved to inherit the spirit of defending the country represented in the Jinbyong Tripitaka Koreana. Second, in Chapter Three, the functions and significance of the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa were discussed. It was confirmed that the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa had ① the function of defending the country, ② the function of cumulating the extant collection of Buddhist treatises, laws, and scriptures, and ③ the function of completing it as the most comprehensive version of the Tripitaka Koreana. Third, in Chapter four, the whole quantity of wooden printing blocks of the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa was discussed. It was computed that 81,234 pieces of the original woodblocks and 118 pieces of the supplementary woodblocks made a total of 81,352 pieces of woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa.

이 논문은 해인사 대장경판의 기능 및 총수량(總數量)의 재지정에 관하여 논술하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제2장에서는, 해인사대장경의 뿌리(根源)는 전쟁을 진압한 대장경인 진병대장경(鎭兵大藏經: 고려 初雕大藏經)에 있음을 논술하였다. 그리하여 해인사대장경(再雕大藏經)은 진병대장경의 護國精神을 이어받아 판각되었음을 확인하였다. 둘째, 제3장에서는 해인사대장경판의 기능 및 가치에 대하여 논술하였다. 그 결과, 해인사대장경판의 기능은 ① 國家守護의 기능, ② 三藏結集의 累加性의 기능, ③ 대장경으로서의 완결성(完結性)의 기능 등이 있음을 살펴보았다. 셋째, 제4장에서는 해인사대장경판의 총수량(總數量) 문제를 논급하였다. 그 결과, 해인사대장경판은 ‘원판분류경판 81,234판’과 ‘보각경판 118판’으로 구성됨으로써 그 총수량(總數量)은 ‘81,352판’으로 집계할 수 있었다.
