¿Son sufijos los sufijos derivativos? - Un enfoque morfosintáctico a los nombres derivados del español
Are derivational suffixes suffixes? - Amorphosyntactic focus on Spanish derived nouns
This paper aims at analyzing the morphosyntacic properties of nominal suffixes and the formation processes of Spanish derived nouns within a Distributed Morphology framework. Nominal suffixes are argued to have rootstatus as they have descriptive content, their meaning is malleable in syntactic or discursive context, and their list incorporates new items. Hence, derived nouns consist of multiple roots and a categorizing head. Moreover, arguments are provided in an order that is intended to show that gender is not a syntactically relevant feature and that it is introduced in the architecture of derivation at PF as a disjoint feature. This proposal gives account of some issues unlikely to be formally explained, such as the mismatch between the thematic vowel of the suffixes and the one imposed by roots, and the alternation of thematic vowels by -a in the feminine forms of these nouns as well as those of non-derived nouns, both referring to female entities.
