This paper examined the shapes of containers and the aspects of excavation of Roman glassware unearthed particularly from Room No. 10 and Room No. 13 among the relics excavated from the ruins in the Palace of Begram in Afghanistan. This palace is known as the summer palace of Kushan Empire. Roman glass is found in the ruins of those that used to live of living in the cities in the Vesuvius area including Pompei, Herculaneum and Stabiae in Italy. The pieces of glass excavated from these ruins are at least as old as the eruption of the Vesuvius Volcano on August 24, 79 CE. In other words, the intact aspects of the uses of Roman glass prior to 79 CE can be found in the ruins of urban living. It was the Roman era, when the glass that had not been settled as an advanced vessel at the time of Hellenism was recognized, and popularized as tableware with its transparency, and ability to conserve the tastes of contents. Glass was loved by the Romans because it was recognized as wine ware related to popular banquet culture in Roman society at the time. Glass could be popularized as a wine container like this because there were technological innovations such as glassblowing production method that could support the social needs of glass in the society. It is determined that the Roman glass found in Begram has been manufactured since the late 1st century CE when Roman glass became popularized. As studied previously, India had consumed wine since the Bactrian era. The appearances of the god of wine, Dionysus motif in Gandhara art proves that people in this area were familiar with wine culture. It is examined in this study, Begram glasses have the same shapes as the glassware excavated from the cities in the Vesuvius areas including Pompei, which was buried by the eruption of the Volcano in 79 CE. All the sites in which 180 pieces of Bagram glass were manufactured have not been discovered, but it is understood that most of them were produced in Alexandria, Egypt. Since a tiger that appeared in hunting scenes on Alexandrian coloring glass only inhabits India, it was carefully assumed that there were manufactured based on orders for the users’ tastes. India is an important area in the process of the spread of Roman glass since it became a base for Roman exports to Southeast Asia and China. Indians that used the Roman glass and were influenced by it, produced beads such as mosaic beads and foil beads, but it still depended on imports of containers from Rome. The fact that plaster mold for producing silver ware was found in Room No. 10 and No. 13 of Begram reveals that silver ware was manufactured in this area. However no silver ware has been found there. Unlike this, it was understood that the stored 180 pieces of glassware show the position of Roman glass in the Kushan society. As the author judged, tone should be cautious to confirm, but any glassware shape estimated as that of the 3rd century CE cannot be found. This probably suggests that this area had been already closed before the invasion of Sasanian Persia. With this in consideration, this paper focused on the studies that viewed all of the Roman glass found in China, which is estimated as ranging from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Western Jin Dynasty, and were imported by sea.
