Contained in the Book of Documents (Shu jing 書經) is King Wen of Zhou’s “Announcement about Drunkenness,” in which the paragon of the rising new dynasty, reflecting not only upon the licentiousness and excess of its last ruler but on the totality of the fallen Yin (Shang) dynasty, wisely remarks that in the failings and successes of the past one might apprehend a prudent course for present governance: “Let not men look only into water; let them look into the mirror of other people. Now that Yin has lost its appointment, ought we not to look to it as our mirror, and learn how to secure the repose of our times.” In subsequent eras, Confucian sage Mencius and other ministers evoked the “Mirror of Yin,” holding before contemporary rulers historical examples of the wicked and self-indulgent to avoid, and precedents of the virtuous and righteous to emulate. As Eugene Wang puts it, “The mirror metaphor thus evolved into a pattern of moralizing historiography or historicizing homily.” History sat before all emperors from the Zhou to the Qing, a looking glass of ever-increasing magnitude.

서경(書經)의 내용은 주나라를 건국하는데 큰 공헌을 한 문왕(周文王)의 주취, 호색과 부절제함 뿐만 아니라 몰락한 은나라 왕조의 정체성까지 반영하고 있다. 과거 속에서의 실패와 성공 중에서 주목해야 할 점은 지금의 통치를 위해 현명한 과정을 이해해야 한다는 것이다. 단지 물속만 보아서는 안 된다. 다른 사람의 거울을 통해서 보는 사람이 되어야 한다. 은나라는 약속을 잃어 버렸고, 우리는 우리의 거울로서 그것을 보아서는 안 된다. 그리고 우리의 시간 속에서 휴식을 얻는 방법을 배워야 한다. 이 후의 시대에서 유교의 현인인 맹자와 다른 철학자들은 당대의 통치자 이전에 지배했던 그 부도덕하고 자기 자신에게 관대한 역사적 예시들을 회피하기 위해서, 더욱이 덕이 있고 공정한 선례를 본뜨기 위해 '은나라'의 거울을 되살려 냈었다. 그러므로 Eugene Wang은 그것을 넣었다. “그 거울은 유는 훈계하는 역사기록학 또는 역사화하는 훈계의 패턴을 점진적으로 진보시켰다. 역사는 주나라로부터 청왕조까지 모든 황제 이전에 놓여있었다. 그러므로 거울을 통해 바라보는 것의 중요도는 더욱 커져가고 있다.
