Clients in counseling often consider taking psychiatric medication due to their severe conditions, and thus expect their counselors to provide some opinions regarding taking medication. This situation is not foreign to Christian counselors because Christians also experiencing suffering and pain, which likely cause them to turn to a medication option. This situation indicates that Christian counselors need to be ready to help their clients. The purpose of this study is to provide some suggestions regarding Christian counseling approach to psychiatric medication. To achieve this purpose, the article first provides a brief summary on the complexity of brain and how the psychiatric drugs work, which show the ambiguity of psychiatry in relation to its diagnosis and drug treatments. By providing some Christian positions on medication, the article tries to offer a balanced approach: accepting benefit of medication but being cautious on drug dependence. Following this approach, the article provides four suggestions: understanding strength of counseling, timely referral to a psychiatrist after initial meeting or before ending counseling, and Christian message on suffering. The article concludes by providing some practical suggestions for Christian counselors; they need to attend educational seminars on medication and supervision meetings directed by a psychiatrist or an expert.

약물치료에 관심이 있거나 약물 치료 중에 있는 내담자들은 그들의 상담자들 에게 약물치료에 관한 의견을 듣고 싶어 한다. 이에 대해 기독교상담자는 약물 치료와 신앙적 관점에 대한 균형적 관점을 갖고 내담자에게 지혜로운 접근을 해 야 한다. 이 논문은 기독교상담자가 상담현장에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 향정신성 약물치료에 어떻게 접근해야 하는지를 기독교적 관점으로 고찰한다. 먼저 이글 은 약물치료와 관련된 뇌신경의 복잡성과 약물치료의 작용 기제를 간단히 설명 한 후 약물치료에 접근하기 위해 기독교 상담자는 균형 잡힌 관점을 가져야 함 을 지적한다. 구체적인 기독교상담자의 입장으로, 본 논문은 약물치료와의 관계에서 상담 의 장점 이해, 상담초기의 정신과 진단의 치료의 의뢰, 내담자의 약물효과의 모 니터링, 그리고 약물사용에 대한 기독교적 관점을 제시한다. 이 네 가지의 접근 은 정신의학의 생물학적인 관점만이 아니라, 환경적, 성격적, 영적 영역을 다루 는 상담의 정당성과 효과, 정신과 전문의 의뢰가 필요한 증상과 약물의 부작용, 그리고 기독교상담가로서 해야 하는 기독교적 접근에 대한 고찰을 포함한다. 결 론 부분에서는 기독교상담자들이 약물치료를 고려하거나 치료 중에 있는 내담 자를 더 효과적으로 돕기 위한 현실적인 노력으로 약물치료에 관한 기독교상담 자들의 이해를 넓히기 위한 학회 차원의 보수교육의 개설과 참여 그리고 전문가 들이 참여하는 슈퍼비전을 제안한다.
