Many western literatures have performed research on the impacts of marriage on individual crime tendencies. A recent literature started to analyze the relationship between the crime and marriage in a macro or collective point of view. There are a lot of discussions on the effects of marriage on crime. Most scholars believe that marriage can decrease the crime, which is seen in both follow-up surveys and quantitative analyses on macro data. However, this paper which uses macro data shows that marriage can make the increase in crime contrary to the prior research. It analyzes with the twelve year (2001 to 2012) samples of sixteen Korean metropolitan local governments. The crime of the samples are comprised of property crime, violent crime, and gambling and sex crime which are meaningfully to be analyzed based on the basic statistics of major crimes categorized by Korean Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. The analysis result made from a fixed effect model shows that the ratio of married family has a significantly positive effect on the property crime and the violent crime respectively, and that the ratio has a significantly negative effect on the gambling and sex crime. Prior research on the crime and marriage seem to have consensus on the negative relationship between marriage and crime as their analyses were based on the western countries where the western culture on the marriage had been settled. However, Korea seems to have a different story. The rapid westernization and epidemic value conflict in it have been driving the disturbance of the traditional values on the marriage and the role of husband and wife, which shows that marriage can cause or increase difficulties. The marriage expenses and children raising expenses can also make a big burden on the shoulder of the married families. This paper shows the evidence from Korean data that marriage can make a negative impact on crime.

서구권에서는 결혼이 개개인별 범죄 성향에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구가 비교적 활발히 수행되어 왔으며 최근에는 집단적 수준에서 결혼가구와 범죄와의 상관관계에대한 연구도 시작되고 있는 추세이다. 결혼의 효과가 범죄에 미치는 영향에 대해서는여러 가지 논의가 있으나 학계의 대체적 입장은 결혼이 범죄율을 감소시킨다고 보고있으며 이는 개인별 추적 조사와 집단에 대한 거시자료 분석 모두에서 동일하게 적용되고 있다. 그러나, 본 연구는 선행연구와 달리 결혼이 범죄를 증가시킬 수 있음을집단에 대한 거시자료를 활용하여 제시하고 있다. 2001년부터 2012년까지 16개 광역 지방자치단체를 대상으로 대검찰청 주요범죄별 기초통계중 분석의 의미가 있는재산범죄, 강력범죄, 풍속범죄와 결혼가구비율 사이의 관계를 고정효과모형을 활용하여 실증 분석하였다. 그 결과 결혼가구 비율은 재산범죄와 강력범죄에 각각 유의한정(+)의 영향을, 풍속범죄에는 유의한 음(-)의 영향을 미침을 확인하였다. 결혼과 범죄에 대한 기존의 연구들은 결혼에 대한 서구적 문화 등 확립된 곳을 대상으로 분석하고 있어 결혼이 범죄를 낮춘다는 공감대를 가지고 있다. 그러나 우리나라의 경우 급격한 서구화 등으로 인해 서구의 가치관들이 급속도로 확산됨에 따라 결혼에 대한전통적인 유교적 가치관이 무너지는 등 결혼이 제반 갈등을 유발하거나 고조시킬 수있고, 결혼 비용 및 자녀 양육비용의 증가로 인하여 결혼으로 인한 경제적 부담이개인 또는 집단에 큰 짐을 지울 수 있다. 그 결과 서구 사회와 달리 결혼이 범죄에부정적 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 본 논문은 한국 사례를 활용하여 제시하고 있다.
