In this paper I survey how the discussions on the adjective derivation in Medieval Korean developed since 1950s and examine the issues for further research such as criterion for distinguishing suffixes, productivity change, doublets, etc. At the early stage in the research history, the list of adjective derivative words in Medieval Korean was compiled, and the distinction between stems and suffixes within derivative adjective was made on the perspective of structuralism. On the ground of early studies, the method of generative morphology could be applied for analyzing the list. The outcomes of the previous research helped the following studies on the adjective derivation both in Modern Korean and in Contemporary Korean.

본고에서는 중세 국어 형용사 파생법에 대한 그동안의 논의들을 정리하고 기존의 연구에 있어서 쟁점이 되어 온 부분과 앞으로의 연구 과제 등을 살펴보았다. 중세 국어 형용사 파생법에 대한 연구는, 이어지는 근대 국어 형용사 파생법의 연구 성과와 현대 국어 형용사 파생법의 연구 성과를 이끌어 내게 하는 중요한 토대가 되었다고 볼 수 있다. 본고에서는 중세 국어 형용사 파생법의 쟁점으로 접미사의 식별 문제, 생산성의 문제, 쌍형어와 이형태의 문제, 접미사와 의존 형용사의 문제 등을 고찰하였다. 이러한 과정 중에 통시적 관점을 바탕으로 한 파생 현상의 이해, 범언어적으로 확인되는 형용사 파생의 양상, 생산성의 변화 양상, 생산성에 대한 계량적 측정 방식 등에 대한 지속적인 관심 역시 필요함을 밝혔다.
