This study aims to introduce the compilation of , the details of which is yet to discover, and ― with it being at the center of discussion ― to reveal the meanings and drawbacks that are inherent in the compilations of tales which were translated into English. was first published in US in 1932. The compiler of this compilation was Berta Metzger, a US fairy-tale writer. In are included 38 Korean tales. Metzger’s compilation is identical to prior compilations like and by Allen, by Griffis, and by Hulbert in that they adapted existing tales. However, it features a unique direction which is different from the Western rationality that changed rabbit’s liver to its eye in , and from the way and goal of adaptation seen in which is intact borrowing of oral narration method in American tale compilations. Inserting new stories which coudn’t be seen in existing tales, shows its awareness of the situation of Korea under Japanese imperialism, directly and indirectly. And in that it was a publication project which was a collaboration of an experienced compiler who had published tales from other countries, the publishing company whose main publication had been tales, and a politician from an unfamiliar country called Korea, could be said to secure a distinctive position from other compilations of tales translated into English.

본 논문은 아직 구체적인 면모가 밝혀지지 않은 Tales told in Korea의 편찬 경위를 소개하고 이 작품을 중심으로 일제 강점기에 영역(英譯)된 한국을 대상으로 엮은 설화집들에 내재되어 있는 의의와 문제점을 드러내는 것을 목적으로 한다. Tales told in Korea는 1932년에 미국에서 발행되었다. 이 설화집을 엮은이는 Berta Metzger라는 미국의 동화 작가이다. Tales told in Korea에는 한국의 설화 38편이 실려 있다. 베르타의 Tales told in Korea는 이전에 간행된 설화집인 알렌의 Korean Tales와 Korea : Fact and Fancy, 그리피스의 The Unmannerly Tiger and Other Korean Tales 그리고 헐버트의 Omjee, The Wizard-Korean Folk Stories와 기존의 설화를 개작했다는 점에서 동일하다. 그러나 Korean Tales에서 드러나는 것처럼 서구적인 합리성에 기반해서 토끼의 간을 눈으로 바꾸거나, 미국의 설화집에서의 구연 방식을 그대로 차용하는 Omjee, The Wizard-Korean Folk Stories의 개작 방식 및 목적과는 다른 방향성이 드러난다. Tales told in Korea에서는 기존의 설화 자료에서는 찾을 수 없었던 새로운 이야기를 삽입하면서, 일제 치하에서의 한국이 처한 상황을 인식하고 있음을 직간접적으로 드러낸다. 또한 이미 다른 나라의 동화를 출판한 경험이 있는 작가와 동화를 주력으로 출판했던 출판사, 한국이라는 생소한 국가 출신의 정치인과 화가가 함께 힘을 합해 출판한 기획물이라는 점에서 Tales told in Korea는 여타의 영역(英譯) 설화집과 차별되는 지점을 확보하고 있다고 할 수 있겠다.
