The purpose of this study is to examine 󰡔Chosun of Legend󰡕 published by Miwa Tamaki in 1919 among Japanese-written Chosun fables’ collections released during the Japanese colonial era. This collection contains total 139 pieces of fables with the following chapter headings: Mountains and Rivers (Chapter 1), Figures (Chapter 2), Animals and Plants & Miscellaneous Stories (Chapter 3), and Children’s Stories (Chapter 4). In ‘Mountains and Rivers’, fables mostly transmitted in the present North Korea regions are contained, and in ‘Figures’, there are mainly fables about figures in the Silla era. ‘Animals and Plants’ contains stories about the origins of animals and plants and allegories, and ‘Children’s Stories’ mainly includes instructive stories. In this way, it contains various types of fables. Unlike the other fables’ collections, this book contains fables dealing with Imjinwaeran (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592). It has three types of stories: stories about Seonjo, stories about great commanders, stories about the rescue forces of Ming Dynasty. Although these fables deal with figures limited to Imjinwaeran, we can see the compiler’s attitude of viewing Chosun people. As he ignored the activities of figures striving to overcome Imjinwaeran but focused on the incompetent king, mean generals thinking of their own honors, or caricaturized monks, we can see his intention to underestimate Chosun people. We can assume how Japanese viewed colonized Chosun in that time with these fables’ collection.

일제 강점기에 간행된 日本語 朝鮮說話集 가운데 미와 다마키(三輪環)가 1919년 간행한 󰡔傳說の朝鮮󰡕은 일본 동경에서 간행한 것으로 주목된다. 이 책은 총 139화의 설화를 채록하여 1편 山川(34화), 2편 人物(38화), 3편 動植物 및 雜(42화), 4편 童話(25화)라는 소제목으로 수록하고 있다. ‘山川’ 편에는 주로 지금의 북한 지역에 전승되는 설화를 채록 수록한 점이, ‘人物’ 편에는 신라시대의 인물 설화를 주로 수록한 점이 특징임을 알 수 있다. ‘動植物’ 편은 동식물 유래담과 우화를, ‘童話’ 편에는 주로 교훈적 이야기 등 다양한 유형의 설화를 수록하고 있다. 특별히 이 책에는 여타 설화집과 달리 임진왜란과 관련된 설화를 수록한 점이 특징이다. 임진왜란 관련 설화를 유형별로 나누면, 1) 宣祖와 관련된 이야기(2화), 2) 名將과 관련된 이야기(3화), 3) 明나라 援軍과 관련된 이야기(3화)로 분류할 수 있다. 이들 이야기를 통해 비록 임진왜란에 한정한 인물이지만 조선인을 바라보는 편찬자의 태도는 분명하다. 임진왜란을 극복한 인물의 활약상은 도외시하고 오히려 무능력한 군주, 자신의 영달만 생각하는 비열한 장군, 희화화된 승려로 부각시킴으로써 조선인을 폄하하고자 하는 의도가 드러나고 있다. 당대 식민지 조선에 대한 일본인의 시각을 이 설화집을 통해 확인할 수 있는 것이다.
