Representing an actual person or persons in historical films requires a different cinematic style, as the representation of an actual person entails ontological questions about the truth, essence and freedom of the person portrayed in the film. However, to meet the needs of the audience, the member of which expect to be moved, and the demands of production/investment companies for commercial viability, classical historical films encounter the problem of mythicizing characters. Main characters and plots are often created in the form of Hollywood-style melodramas. The narratives of biographical films are discussed here. The narratives of actual people, typically arranged in a chronological order, tend to be eventually transformed into a melodramatic narrative, thus becoming mythical. In this transformation, i.e., stylizing the narrative, the uniqueness and the truth of actual people are lost and the characters transform into the common and universal types in melodramas. This paper discusses reflective representation in biographical films. The biographical film 'I'm Not There' will be analyzed to define the reflective characteristics of biographical films. During this process, these concepts will be suggested as methods for this type of analysis. Through these examinations and discussions, this thesis intends to show that biographical films, a subgenre of cinema, are indeed a distinctive art form in which historical imaginations and cinematic imaginations interact. Reflective biographical films as art and the essence of the existence of 'actual people' present an opportunity to discuss new possibilities of historical films as alternative means of expression.

본 논문은 전기 영화에서 전기적 인물이 신화적으로 재현되는 문제를 논의하고, 동시에 이를 탈신화적으로 재현할 가능성에 대해 질문한다. 영화에서 전기적 인물을 재현하는 문제는 허구적인 캐릭터를 재현하는 것과는 질적으로 다른 접근이 요구된다. 이는 전기적 인물이 갖고 있는 진실에 대한 존재론적 문제가 개입되기 때문이다. 그러나 할리우드 스튜디오 시스템을 기반으로 한 전기 영화의 내러티브는 인물을 영웅화하며 신화화하는 문제를 안고 있다. 전기 영화의 주인공들은 할리우드 양식의 멜로드라마 속 주인공들과 비슷한 플롯 공식 속에서 신화적으로 재현되기 때문이다. 이를 통해 전기적 인물의 진실은 서서히 멀어지고 결국엔 멜로드라마 속 영웅적 주인공이 되어버리며 신화화된다. 이러한 한계를 극복하고 있는 텍스트로 제안하는 토드 헤인즈 감독의 밥 딜런에 대한 전기 영화 는 전통적 전기 영화와는 다른 양식을 구사하는 작품이다. 이 영화는 전통적인 전기 영화의 환영적이고 신화적인 재현 방식과는 다르게 밥 딜런을 재현하면서 동시에 관객의 성찰을 유도한다. 영화가 보여주는 새로운 내러티브 구성과 시간 배열은 독자와 관객을 연속적 시간으로 이뤄진 전기적 인물의 신화적인 드라마 속으로 빠져들게 하는 것이 아니라, 전기적 인물이 살아가는 새로운 시간과 공간에 대해 다시금 성찰하게 만들면서 밥 딜런의 존재와 진실에 대해 진지하게 질문하게 만든다. 본 연구는 이렇게 전기 영화의 함정을 극복하는 ‘다른 영화’에 대한 가능성을 질문 하고자 하며, 전통적 전기 영화와는 ‘다른 식으로 이야기하는’ 탈신화적 전기 영화의 가능성에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다.
