- Dongmyeong theater was erected on Hamheung for Korean people in 1923. The construction of Dongmyeong theater was done by Hamheung merchants. Thus, the Korean people in Hamheung were able to secure the theater which can expand their skill on plays and their thinking on arts. During Japanese colonial period, Korean local theater have served the function of dealing with the regional concern socially and culturally. Especially, Dongmyeong theater on Hamheung may be the theater this function are enabled on. So, Dongmyeong theater was the theater that was built by the merchant of Hamheung for commercial purposes, but was possible to be used as the place to put out with the great sadness and the joy and the hope of Korean local people at the same time.
