The purpose of this paper is to share the findings of a study that focused on the trend of discourse on cultural difference and diversity and its implications. To achieve the aim, this article deals with following themes: discourse and its issues regarding cultural difference and diversity, cultural difference/diversity and the concept of cultural space, and learning process related to cultural difference/diversity. The bottom line of this study can be formulated as follows: Dialectical relationships as basic structures and processes can be identified not only on the level of epistemic objects but also on the level of epistemic subjects. Typical dialectical relationships lie also between/among the traditional concept of cultural space symbolized usually as container and the alternative concept presented in lots of deconstructive attempt or movement vis-à-vis this concept, and the concept of selective cultural space. Such dialectical connections seem to exist also between the processes of assimilation and accommodation and between ego- and hetero-understanding in the context of intercultural communication. Based on such generalizations, it seems to be necessary to take the discourse and relevant issues into consideration and to search for appropriate policy and practical tasks and ways.

본고의 목적은 독일과 유럽의 동향을 중심으로 하여 문화적 차이ㆍ다양성에 관한 담론을 살펴보고, 여기에 기초하여 우리 사회에서의 담론과 실천을 위한 함의를 도출하는 데 놓여 있다. 본고에서 강조할 사항은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전체적으로 살펴볼 때, 문화적 차이․다양성과 관련된 인식대상의 수준에서뿐만 아니라 인식주 체의 수준에서도 역시 기본적인 구조와 과정으로서 변증법적인 관계를 확인할 수 있다. 둘째, 컨테이너로 상징되는 전통적인 문화공간 개념과 이 문화공간 개념을 해체하려는 시도와 움직임, 그리고 다시금 선택적 문화공간 개념을 상정하려는 시도 사이에는 전형적인 변증법적 관계가 놓여 있다고 해석할 수 있다. 셋째, 간문화 소통의 과정에서 외부세계에 대한 주관적 도식과 인지모형의 적응과정(조절)과 외부세계를 내면세계 안으로 적응시키기 위한 외부세계의 변화(동화) 사이에 존재하는 변증법 적 관계에 유의할 필요가 있다. 넷째, 문화적 차이ㆍ다양성에 관한 담 론과 쟁점, 문화공간의 개념, 문화적 차이ㆍ다양성의 경험과 관련된 학습과정에서 도출할 수 있는 함의로서는 문화주의, 문화적 본질주의, 전통적 문화공간 개념에 대하여 경계해야 한다는 점을 강조할 필요가 있다. 이와 더불어 상기한 변증법을 둘러싼 논의와 쟁점을 동시에 고려하면서 우리 사회의 통합과 정체성 확립을 위해 적절한 정책적․실천적 과제와 방안을 모색할 필요가 있다.
