The premise of this study is that caregiving is a universal task that falls upon everyone some time in their life, whether as a caregiver or a care-receiver. This study seeks to identify the level of caregiving awareness by demographic characteristics and by experience of careviging and exposure to caregiving through college-level curricula. 472 adult students attending an online university in Seoul were given a caregiving awareness questionnaire, to measure 1) their understanding on the universality of caregiving; 2) their interest in caregiving; and 3) their readiness for caregiving. Respondents’ awareness on the universality of caregiving scored an average of 4.10 out of 5, a rather high score, but the rate of interest came out as 3.46, with the level of readiness falling even lower, at 2.58. The demographic variables that significantly affect caregiving awareness were sex, age, and the presence or absence of surviving parents. Caregiving experience also strongly affected caregiving awareness: students having such an experience showed higher levels on all three categories of caregiving awareness. Students previously enrolled in, and thus exposed to, caregiving curricula also showed a significantly higher level of interest in caregiving, though not in readiness. Based on these findings, this study suggests the need for a comprehensive caregiving curriculum that draws attention to, and enables adult students to prepare for the task of caregiving that lies ahead of them.

돌봄은 생애과정에서 누구나 직면하게 되는 삶의 보편적 과제라는 전제하에 본 연구는 성인학습자들의 돌봄에 대한 인식 수준을 파악하고, 인구학적 요인 및 돌봄 경험에 따른 차이를 검증하였다. 이를 위해 서울 소재 A사이버대학교 재학생을 대상으로 돌봄의 보편성에 대한 인식, 돌봄에 대한 관심도와 준비도로 구성된 돌봄 인식 설문조사를 실시하였다. 응답자는 총 472명이었으며, 분석 결과 돌봄의 보편성에 대한 인지수준은 5점 척도 기준에서 4.10로 높게 나타났으나, 관심도는 3.46, 준비도는 2.58로 나타나 돌봄의 보편성에 대한 인지에 비해 돌봄에 대한 개별적인 관심이나 준비도는 상당히 저조한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 한편 돌봄 인식에 차이를 주는 요인은 성, 연령, 전공, 부모생존여부 등의 인구학적 요인과 돌봄 관련 경험 요인인 것으로 나타났다. 특히 돌봄제공 경험이 있는 경우는 그렇지 않은 경우에 비해 돌봄 인식의 세 가지 하위 영역 모두에서 높은 평균값을 보였으며, 돌봄 관련 과목 수강여부역시 관심도 영역에 유의미한 차이를 가져왔다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 바탕으로, 돌봄 준비 교육의 필요성과 이를 위한 방안을 제시하였다.
