Immigration of Overseas Chinese has a history of more than one hundred years in Japan. Overseas Chinese, as immigrants, are not fully assimilated into Japanese society but they have formed their own cultural identity by inheriting the native language and culture. Because there are overseas Chinese schools as a place of ethnic education, overseas Chinese are capable of forming their ethnic communities in Japan, a racially homogeneous nation. In order to analyze the role of overseas Chinese School in adaptation process of Japanese society, fieldwork was conducted mainly in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Kobe which these areas are characterized by being a residential district of overseas Chinese. And in-depth interview was carried out 10 participants who were graduated from overseas Chinese school. The school which has become a major education facility is a positive factor for integration in Japan, and it also has a significant impact on cultural exchange between China and Japan. In particular, as ‘multicultural co-existence’ is a new issue of Japanese society, the school provided trilingual education and cultural education of China and Japan performs key roles in uniting Chinese communities, as well as in acting a catalyst for leading multicultural co-existence in Japan. And the school is not only the fulcrum to maintain and develop the overseas Chinese community through education of mother tongue and traditional culture, but also the link between Chinese community and China. Moreover, the school is the symbolic mechanism to embody homeland in Japan.

화교· 화인의 일본 이주는 오랜 역사를 가지고 있다. 이주민으로서의 화교· 화인은 일본사회에 완전히 동화된 것이 아니라, 모국어와 모국문화를 계승함으로써 그들만의 문화정체성을 형성하고 있다. 화교· 화인들이 단일민족국가 일본에서 그들만의 민족공동체를 형성할 수 있는 것은 화교· 화인의 문화 계승자를 육성하는 민족교육의 장 ― 화교학교가 있기 때문이다. 화교· 화인의 일본사회 현지적응 과정에서 화교학교의 역할을 탐구하기 위해 이 연구는 그들이 밀접거주하고 있는 도쿄, 요코하마, 오사카, 고베지역을 중심으로 현지조사를 진행하였으며, 화교학교 출신 10명의 연구 참여자를 선정해 심층면접을 진행하였다. 연구결과, 일본 화교· 화인의 주요한 교육시설로 자리매김한 화교학교는 일본 화교사회의 통합과 안정적 발전에 긍정적 요인으로 작용하고 있으며, 또한 중· 일 문화교류에도 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 특히 다문화공생이 일본사회의 새로운 이슈로 등장하자, 화교학교의 3중언어교육과 중· 일 문화 교육을 병행하는 운영방식은 화교사회의 융합은 물론, 일본사회의 다문화공생을 추진하는 촉매역할을 수행하고 있다. 화교학교는 중국어 및 전통문화 교육을 통해 화교사회를 유지하고 발전시키는 버팀목일 뿐만 아니라, 일본 화교사회와 중국을 연결하는 연결고리이며, 더불어 화교· 화인이 거주국에서 모국을 체화시키는 상징기제이기도 하다.
