This study investigates gold and silver ornaments excavated in the tombs of Nangnang Period, near modern city of Pyeongyang in North Korea. These tombs have been excavated and researched since the Japanese colonial period, but the artifacts from there have not yet fully studied. The most important gold and silver artifacts of Nangnang tombs had been regarded as imported goods from Han China under the colonial view of modern Japanese scholars. However, in recent studies on Nangnang cultures, many scholars denied such view. Here I insist that the gold and silver ornaments in Nangnang Tombs had not made in China but made in Nangnang territory under the Northern Eurasian style of gold and silver-smithing. The most important artifact of such style is the famous gold buckle of Seokamri tomb no. 9 which is now Korean National tresure no. 89. Many Japanese scholars insisted that this gold buckle with high quality were made in the imperial Han China and distributed to the foreign officials in the Chinese colonial territory. But such high level techniques of gold and silver ornaments had much prevailed in the nomadic peoples in Central Asia from ancient times and transmitted to Mongolia and North Korea during the early period of this common era by the nomadic peoples such as Xiongnu. The present gold and silver ornaments of Nangnang tombs are classified into three categories; (1) gold and silver belt buckles for man, (2) gold and silver ornaments for harness, (3) rings and bracelets for man and woman. Some of these ornaments were discovered on the body of the buried people for the direct wearing. These gold and silver ornaments might be regarded not only as prestige goods for the ruling class of Nangnang society but also as material representations of cultural identities for the natives of Nangnang territory. The culture of Nangnang had developed on the basis of the original local cultures of ancient Joseon with complex mixtures not only of the traditional friend Xiongnu of the North but also of the foreign political ruler of Han China. The gold and silver ornaments from Nangnang tombs represent not only such cultural relationships between ancient Northen Korea and Xiongnu in Mongolia, but also the unrevealed and unwritten sign of cultural autonomy for the local rulers of Nangnang over the predominant political influence of Han China.
