Korean old novel 『Simcheongjeon』based on the filial piety has been used as the text in elementary schools. In this novel, sacred lotus(Nelumbo nucifera), the symbol of Buddhism, is included, and the heroine Simcheong give up the youth life and become the holy adult using the flower of sacred lotus. Although several researches were accomplished, the research on the identity of sacred lotus based on plant physiological aspect and its application to 『Simcheongjeon』 was not conducted. This paper intends to reinterpret the korean old novel 『Simcheongjeon』 based on the knowledge of the physiological characters of sacred lotus, examining from following questions; 1) whether the budding flower is sacred lotus, 2) whether Simcheong enter the budding flower, 3) when did the petals of sacred lotus open, 4) how did Simcheong live within the budding flower, 5) how did Simcheong keep going out and in of the sacred lotus, and finally 6) whether the sacred lotus is living on the seawater. As the results, some aspects were confirmed as fiction, included Simcheong’s entrance into and living within the sacred lotus, and the possibility of the living of sacred lotus upon the seawater. However, the flowering time and nyctinastic movement of sacred lotus are botanically true. These non-fiction should be understood as not the fantasy but the observation results about the sacred lotus by the writers or citizens.

심청의 효를 이야기한 고소설 『심청전』은 학교 교육에서도 널리 사용되는 교육 용 재료이다. 이 고소설에는 불교의 상징인 연꽃이 등장하는데, 연꽃을 통해 심청은 과거의 삶과 연꽃 이후 삶의 극단적 대비를 이룬다. 이 연꽃에 대해 많은 연구에 이 루어졌으나, 식물로서 연꽃에 대한 연구는 부족한 상태이며, 특히 연꽃의 생리학적 특성을 근거로 『심청전』을 분석한 연구는 거의 없는 상태이다. 따라서 본 연구에서 는 식물학이라는 관점에서 심청전 내용을 분석하여 ① 심청이 들어간 꽃은 연꽃 인가, ② 연꽃 속으로 심청이가 들어갈 수 있는가, ③ 연꽃은 언제 피는가, ④ 연꽃 속에서 심청은 어떻게 살 수 있었는가, ⑤ 심청은 연꽃에서 어떻게 나왔다 들어가기 를 반복했는가, 그리고 ⑥ 연이 바다에서 살 수 있는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 사람의 상상력으로 만들어진 설화를 과학적 합리성으로 분석하여, 과학이라는 관점에서 심청전을 다시 읽어 보고자 했다. 연꽃의 크기로 볼 때 심청이 연꽃 속으로 들어 가는 것은 불가능하며, 연꽃 속에서 심청이 살아가는데 필요한 먹거리는 없었을 것 이며, 연이 바다에서 살 수는 없다는 사실을 확인하였다. 그러나 『심청전』에서 설명 하는 연꽃의 개화 시기와 개화 과정은 과학적으로 입증될 수 있으며, 연꽃이 주야운 동을 함으로 심청이 연꽃 속에서 나왔다 다시 들어갈 수는 있었을 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 결과는 고소설을 환상으로만 풀어내는 것보다는 과학이라는 잣대를 통해 조 상들의 합리적 관찰 결과로서 풀어낼 수도 있음을 보여준 사례로 파악되었다.
