This is a study on the old novel, Yangsijeon . this work has not been performed except for plot and dismentle work of Yangsijeonyila (different versions of Yangsijeon ) Therefore, this research would like to clarify features and meaning of the work based on bibliographic data and relationships with other different versions of Yangsijeon by organizing several different versions of Yansijeon . All different version of Yangsijeon are Handwriting for a Korean Manuscript. And a archives let us know Yangsijeon had been read mainly amongst women by the early 20th century. The different versions in this research can be divided into ‘hyoyeol(孝烈) version’ and ‘chunghyo(忠孝) version’ depending on difference in content. Contens of the Yangsijeon is a story that ‘Hyoyulbu(孝烈婦) Yang’ crosses the four seas and Three God Mountain to cure her mother-in-law of a disease with magic medicine and her son Yongseong escapes his family memebers including his father and finally lives in splendor after becoming a national hero. In a word, this old novel is heroic epics which has Mrs. Yang and Yongseong as the main characters. They have aspects of ‘heroine of th quest’ and ‘hero of the war’. Above all, Mrs. Yang is the most important character who shows what the ideal wife and heroine is in the novel. On the other hand, Yangsijeon is the pastiche text. it was afluenced by hero fiction, a love fiction, Gu-yak(救藥, Journey for magic medicine) motif. and Yolnyojun(列女傳) It has the typical features of the fictions from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. But It also puts emphasis on confucian ethics at that time with fictional transformation to a certain degree.

본고는 고소설 ｢양씨전｣에 대한 연구이다. ｢양씨전｣은 작품의 줄거리 소개, 이 본 ｢양씨전이라｣의 해제 작업 외에는 별다른 연구가 진행되지 않은 작품이다. 그 리하여 본고에서는 ｢양씨전｣의 여러 이본을 정리하여 그에 대한 서지정보 및 이 본간 관계를 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 작품의 특징 및 소설로서의 가치를 밝히고 자 한다. 현재 발견된 ｢양씨전｣의 이본은모두 국문필사본이다. 이들 이본의 필사기록을 보면 양씨전 이 20세기초까지도 향유되었고, 주로 여성층 안에서필사 향유되었 음을 알 수 있다. 본고에서 구득한 이본들은 내용상의 차이에 따라 각각 ‘효열 계 열’ 과 ‘충효 계열’로 나눌 수 있었다. ｢양씨전｣의 내용은 효열부 양씨가 시모의 병을 구하기 위해 사해를 건너고 삼신산을 넘어 선약을 구해오고, 그 의 아들 남용성이 볼모로 잡혀간 아버지 등 가족 들을 구하고 나라의 영웅이 되어 모두가 부귀영화를 누린다는 이야기이다. 이 작 품은 한마디로 양부인과 남용성을 중심으로 한 영웅일대기 서사로, 이들은 각각 탐색 영웅, 군담 영웅으로서의 면모를 갖추고 있다. 그중에서도 양부인은 양씨전 서사 전체를 아우르고 있는 작품의 주인공으로 존재하고 있다. 한편 양씨전 의 서사는 영웅소설, 애정소설, 구약서사, 열녀전 등에서 영향을 받은 작품으로, 19세기 후반 20세기 초반에 등장하는 소설류의 전형적인 특징을 가지고 있다. 그러면서도 반영된 화소들의 일정한 변용을 통해 효열부 양씨의 모 습을 부각하고 동시에 당대의 유교 윤리를 더욱 강조하고 있다. 이러한 ｢양씨전｣의 모습은 조선말 향유된 윤리소설로 의미가 있다.
