Gale's unpublished Si-jo translations are included in typed Pen-picture of Old Korea(1912, 『朝鮮筆景』) and handwritten Diary(1921-1922) both of which are located in James Scarth Gale Papers, a collection of the Thomas Fischer Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto in Canada. The first chapter of POK reintroduced Gale's 9 Si-jo translations which had been already published in The Korean Repository(1892, 1895-98); also included Gale's 6 Si-jo translations which would be reintroduced only in Diary; and remarkably included 3 illustrations by Ki San Kim Chun-gun to help English readers understand Korean Si-jo. Diary included 42 numbered Si-jo translations whose original were The Collection of Si-jo by Nam Hoon(『南薰太平歌』). 32 pieces of his Si-jo translations can be found only in Diary. Gale's Si-jo translations in Gale's Papers show his dynamic translation practices and his changing views on Korean literature. We can infer this through his selection of original Si-jo pieces. Gale at first selected Si-jo pieces based on Korean syntactic structure, but he gradually started to select those based on Chinese syntactic structure and those including authentic precedents from Chinese classics and Chinese literary contexts. It is supposed that he selected Si-jo pieces which can reflect the gradually disappearing Old Korea.

캐나다 토론토대학 토마스피셔 희귀본 장서실에 보관 중인 『게일 유고』(Gale, James Scarth Papers)에는 게일이 출판하지 못한 미간행 영역시조가 들어있 다. 『朝鮮筆景』(1912) Ⅰ장에는 과거 게일이 The Korean Repository에 연 재했던 영역시조 9수와 함께, 『게일 유고』에서만 볼 수 있는 6수의 영역시조가 수록되어 있다. 또한 시조작품의 이해를 도와주는 기산 김준근의 풍속화 3점이 들 어 있다. 『일지』(1921~1922)에는 『남훈태평가』소재 시조 1~42를 순서대로 번역한 게일의 영역시조가 수록되어 있다. 『게일 유고』에서만 볼 수 있는 작품이 36수이다. 『게일 유고』소재 영역시조를 통해 게일의 역동적인 번역실천과 그의 한국문학관의 변모양상이 담겨져 있다. 게일의 작품선정의 모습이 한국어 통사구 조를 기반으로 한 시조작품에서 점차 한문통사구조를 지닌 시조작품, 중국고전의 전고를 간직한 작품을 포괄하는 방향으로 변모됨을 발견할 수 있다.
