Although many studies on 『Sindan gong'an(神斷公案)』, a serial novel in 『Hwangsong Sinmun(皇城新聞)』, have been conducted, the discussion especially about its writing style has not made enough progress. That may be because there is rampant use of colloquial Chinese which makes it hard to interpret the work and it is hard to find unifying characteristics since each series has its irregular style which varies greatly. However, the other side of it is that we can find such a variety of characteristics of writing style in Sindan gong'an(神斷公案)』. This article argues that one of the typical characteristics is the using of critical remarks. Due to the traits of serial novels, Sindan gong'an(神斷公案) employed the form of critical remarks from the intention of its relevant media, 『Hwangsong Sinmun(皇城新聞)』. Thus, in order to completely understand the work, we need to take the procedures for comprehending what literary forms had affected the work and what effects it intended to maximize. There are a variety of factors in the characteristics of critical remarks used in 『Sindan gong'an(神斷公案)』. But this study is focused on Chinese critical commentary versions, because among the forms of critical remarks frequently appears Hyeop-bi, a critical remark in parentheses. The writing style was the writer's intention of attracting as various readers as he could and it was also a measure for broadening the spectrum of readership which 『Hwangsong Sinmun(皇城 新聞)』 had always been concerned about.

『皇城新聞』의 연재소설인 『神斷公案』은 그동안 많은 연구들이 진행되었지만, 유독 문체 부분에서 논의의 진척을 이루지 못했다. 이는 백화체의 난무(亂舞)로 인한 작품해독의 난해함과 각 회마다 심한 변이가 보이는 변칙적 문체들로 인해 작품의 일관된 특징을 찾기가 어려워서일 것이다. 그러나 뒤집어 생각하면, 『神斷 公案』에서 찾을 수 있는 문체적 특징이 그만큼 다양하다는 말이 된다. 본고에서 그 대표적 특징으로 꼽은 것은 ‘평어의 활용(내용․형식상의 변용)’이 다. 신문연재 소설의 특성상 해당매체의 특정의도에 따라 이 같은 평어의 형식을 차용한 것이므로, 이것이 과거 어떠한 문학형식의 영향이며 이를 통해 극대화하려 는 효과가 무엇인지를 파악하려는 작업은 『神斷公案』이라는 작품을 온전히 이해 하기 위해 반드시 선행되어야 할 과정이라 생각한다. 『神斷公案』평어의 변칙적 특징은 다양한 요인들이 있겠지만, 본 연구에서는 중국 평비본에 초점을 맞추었다. 이는 과거 평비방식 가운데, 회중평(回中評)인 협비(夾批)가 『神斷公案』 곳곳에서 빈번히 등장하기 때문이다. 이는 문화적 소 양과는 상관없는 가급적 다양한 독자층을 포섭하기 위한 작자의 의도이며, 『皇城 新聞』이 줄곧 고민해온 독자층의 확대에 대한 방편으로 활용된 것이다.
