This paper was written to investigate the meaning of the name of the『 Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra』. The meaning of the sutra’s name can be interpreted in various ways according to ideological background or stance of posterity Nonsa(論師). This paper will focus on the meaning of those days when the text was built by investigating the original Sanskrit name. The first, the 'Banya(般若)' is a direct transliteration of prajñā which means wisdom. Unlike mundane wisdom, the Banya is the strong force which can sail across the sea of birth and death. Because it can remove the ‘Unwisdom(無明)’ which is the number one cause of Twelve Nidānas(緣起), and can extricate everybody from the cycle of death and rebirth(輪廻). Secondly, some say the ‘Kumgang(金剛)’ means the diamond. But by going through linguistic analysis, it is reasonable to assume that the 'Kumgang' means the vajra(金剛杵) which is a weapon of Indra, the god of thunder and thunderbolt. Lastly, There are many different view on the 'Baramil(波羅蜜)'. Through the linguistic analysis, we got to know the 'Baramil’ has four meanings. : the first is 'the completion of the wisdom (or absolutely perfect wisdom)', the second is 'ultimate achievement', the third is 'entering a state of enlightenment', the fourth is 'causing a change of heart'. Upon further review, we came to the conclusion that 'entering a state of enlightenment' and 'causing a change of heart' are worthy of more meaningful name of sutra rather than 'the completion of the wisdom' and 'ultimate achievement'. And furthermore, it seems that 'causing a change of heart' is ever more noteworthy because it suggests the deeper meaning of those days when the text is built and denominated.

이 논문은 『금강반야바라밀경』의 경명(經名)에 대해 그 뜻을 규명해 보려는 목적에서 작성된 것이다. ‘금강반야바라밀경’이라는 이름의 뜻을 규명하는 데에 있어 후대 논사들의 사상적 배경이나 입장에 따라 해석은 여러 가지로 달라질 수 있겠지만, 이 논문에서는 경의 원래 제목인 범어(梵語)를 살펴봄으로써 경전이 형성될 당시 가졌던 의미들에 중점을 두고자 한다. 먼저 반야는 prajñā의 음역(音譯)으로 ‘지혜’를 뜻하며, 세속의 지혜와는 달리 십이연기에서 생로병사의 근본이 되는 무명을 끊어주어 생사고통의 바다에서 벗어나게 해주는 강력한 힘임을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 금강은 금강석이라고 보는 견해도 있지만, 그보다는 인드라신이 사용하는 벼락의 무기인 금강저로 보는 것이 보다 타당성을 가짐을 언어적 분석을 통해 밝혔다. 바라밀에 대해서는 여러 가지 이견들이 존재하는데, 먼저 네 가지의 언어적 분석을 통해 첫째는 ‘지혜를 완성함(혹은 완벽한 지혜)’, 둘째는 ‘궁극의 성취’, 셋째는 ‘피안으로 감’, 넷째는 ‘마음을 돌이킴’이란 유의미한 경명을 도출해 낼 수 있었다. 이들을 하나씩 사상적으로 검토해 본 결과 ‘도피안’과 ‘마음을 돌이키는 것’이 보다 더 경명으로서의 유의미성을 가짐을 알 수 있었다. 그중에서도 ‘마음을 돌이키는 것’이란 뜻은 우리가 가장 눈여겨봐야 할 뜻이라고 보이며, 경전이 형성되고 명명될 당시의 뜻을 가장 잘 담고 있다고 생각된다.
