This study proactively interprets South Korean writer Kang Young-sook’s novel, Rina not as a media that interprets the diaspora life prior and after crossing the national border, but as ethnic groups such as civilization/barbarism, colonialist/non-colonialist as perceiving it as a ‘liminal interpreter’ standing at the border between nations. This can be achieved by revealing ambivalence and hybridity of Rina in proceeding each circumstance that it goes beyond the dichotomy of North Korean escapees (specificity)/refugees (universality). This study enables proactive interpretation of Rina in the meaning of ethnicity by surpassing the fundamental uniformed identities constructed by narrations. In this perspective, this study does not locate escapees including Rina as a victim but analyzes the appearances of “internal colonialism” that exploit and dominate other escapees through internalization and independent motives for colonialism. This shows the hybrid structures of center (ruler) and surrounding (non-ruler group) as the escapees exist in the center as well as the surrounding (non-ruler) without locational boundaries in the dichotomic structure of center-surrounding. Furthermore, hybridity is more elaborated by subversive “mimicry” and hybrid space. Incantatory music performances and industrial zones mixed with the chanting sound from workers show hybrid space that goes beyond the dichotomy of civilization/barbarism. In addition, although Rina fulfills the roles that colonialists/rulers demand, Rina prevails threatening “mimicry” imitating colonialist when she exposes the truth that colonialists (managers) become contaminated. Furthermore, this work shows “non-conglomerate community” consisting of coincidental fulfillments while Rina escaping and rejecting the blood-tied family. In particular, by communicating through “heterolingual address” with pictures, music, and bodies instead of “homolingual address” for identical interpretation, this work enables communication through transparent translations.

본고에서는 강영숙의 『리나』를 국경을 넘기 전/후의 디아스포라적인 삶을 번역하는 매개자가 아니라, 나라와 나라 사이인 국경에선 ‘임계적인(liminal) 번역자’로 보면서 문명/야만, 식민/피식민 등의 민족을 적극적으로 번역하고자 한다. 이는 리나를 탈북(특수성)/난민(보편성)의 이분법으로 보는 것에서 벗어나 리나가 각각의 상황에서 수행하는 양가성과 혼종성(hybridity)을 드러낸다. 네이션을 중심으로 구성되는 본질적이고 단일한 정체성을 벗어날 때 민족의 의미를 적극적으로 번역할 수 있게 되는 것이다. 이러한 관점에서 먼저 리나를 비롯한 탈출자들이 피해자나 희생자로 위치하는 것이 아니라, 식민주의에 대한 자발적 동의나 내면화를 통해 다른 탈출자들을 착취하고 지배하는 ‘내부 식민성’을 드러낸다는 것을 분석한다. 이는 탈출자들이 중심/주변의 이분법적 구도에서 주변의 위치에 한정되지 않고 중심(지배자 집단)에 주변(피지배자)이 존재하고, 주변(피지배 집단)에도 중심(지배자)이 혼종적으로 구성될 수 있음을 보여준다. 또한 혼종성은 혼종적인 공간과 전복적인 ‘흉내 내기’를 통해 더 적극적으로 드러난다. 주술적인 노래 공연과 노동자의 구호 소리가 섞이는 공단 지대와, 이러한 지대를 가르는 퍼포먼스는 문명/야만의 이분법을 넘어서는 혼종적 공간을 보여준다. 더불어 리나가 식민/지배자가 원하는 역할을 하면서도 진실을 폭로할 때 식민자를 모방하면서 위협하는 ‘흉내 내기’가 나타나며 이를 통해 식민자(관리자)는 오염된다. 나아가 이 작품에서는 혈연을 통한 가족을 거부하면서 탈출 과정에서 우연적인 요소에 따라 수행적으로 이루어진 ‘비집성적 공동체’가 나타난다. 특히 동일한 이해를 목적으로 하는 ‘균질언어적 말걸기’ 가 아니라 ‘이언어적 말걸기’를 통해 투명한 번역의 불가능성을 언어 대신 그림, 노래, 몸으로 소통하면서 오히려 가능성으로 전환하고 있다.
