This research has introduced flaneur concept to analyze the space identity and sense of space of Myeongdong in the piece of Lee Bonggu after independence and think about the meaning that connects the literature of Lee Bong-gu and Myeongdong. First, Lee Bong-gu possesses Myeongdong that was the object of looking around and travel in the position of the flaneur. The characters that wander Myeondong are the symbol of new youth has changed the visual paradigm of Myeongdong through walk and trip. Second, Lee Bong-gu watches and at the same time possesses the inside and outside of Myeongdong. Lee Bong-gu emphasizes ‘Esprit’ as the open sense that is not yet affected by intellectual hegemony and the sensitivity of the global citizens. At the same time he faces the illusion of Myeongdong and perceives Myeongdong as the space of statelessness and hybridity and the boundary of the world. Last, Lee Bong-gu reenacts the traces of the past Myeongdong into ‘illustrative view’ and ‘unconscious memory’ through melancholic emotion. This comes from the nostalgia of he lost spirit of Myeongdong and changed Myeongdong. The method to narrate the trivial incidents and individual episodes is the device that prevents the aestheticization of Myeongdong. Lee Bong-gu is the author that has existential internality of Myeongdong and Myeongdong is the core symbol system of Lee Bonggu’s literature. The literature of Lee Bong-gu can be said the literary montage of Myeongdong.

본고는 산책자 개념을 도입해 해방 후부터 1950년대까지 이봉구 작품에서 명동이라는 로컬리티가 형성하는 장소 정체성과 장소감을 분석함으로써 이봉구 문학과 명동이 맺는 의미를 재고해보고자 했다. 40년 세월을 명동에서 보낸 이봉구는 명동에 대해 무의식적인 유대와 소속감을 갖고 ‘실존적 내부성’을 경험한 작가로서, 명동은 이봉구 문학의 핵심적인 표상 체계이다. 해방 후 이봉구는 구경과 여행의 대상이던 명동을 산책자의 위치에서 사유한다. 이봉구는 일제 강점기 가상의 아우라를 제공하는 타자의 공간이었던 명동을 되찾은 ‘집’으로 호명하여 실존의 거주지로 삼고 내부자의 시선을 가동시킨다. 해방 공간을 산책과 만유(漫遊)의 풍경으로 재현함으로써 새 시대에 걸맞은 자유로운 정신과 새로운 감각을 지향하는 청춘의 열망을 포착하고 변화된 명동의 시각적 패러다임을 제시하고자 했다. 산책자로서 이봉구는 명동을 통해 장소 내부와 외부를 동시에 응시하고 비판 하는 양가적 시선을 견지한다. 그는 ‘에스프리’를 세대론을 초월하고 국가 이데올로기와 문단 헤게모니에 물들지 않은 개방적인 감각이자 세계시민의 감수성으로 이해하고 명동의 정신과 동일시했다. 그런 동시에 파리를 모방하는 예술가들의 모습을 통해 명동의 허상을 직시하고, 명동을 한국문화예술의 중심이 아닌 무국적성과 혼종성의 에뜨랑제가 넘치는 세계의 변방으로 이동시키는 심상지리적 재편과정을 보여준다. 또한 산책자로서 이봉구는 멜랑콜리적인 정서에 기반해 과거 명동의 흔적을 ‘삽화적 시선’과 ‘무의지적 기억’의 방식으로 재현한다. 이것은 해방기 명동의 정신을 상실하고 혼종성의 공간으로 변질된 명동에 대한 향수에서 기인한다. 그러나 그의 기록들은 일정한 질서에 따른 연대기적 서술방식이 아니라, 서로 무관해 보이는 개별 에피소드들과 사소하고 무질서한 사건들을 나열하는 방식으로 서술되어 있다. 이런 접근법은 명동의 아우라를 복원해 정당화하거나 기억을 강제로 주입해 심미화하지 않는 장치로 작동한다. 이처럼 명동 산책자 이봉구가 명동을 ‘보는’ 행위는 단순히 명동의 풍경을 보는 것이 아니라 그 시선의 프레임 안에서 세계와 자신의 존재를 사유하는 행위에 해당한다. 그런 의미에서 이봉구 문학은 도시 인상학을 실천한 사례이며 명동에 대한 문학적 몽타주가 될 수 있다.
