This studies to date on Kim Soo-Young’s essay on poetry, “Poetry, Spit It Out”, have been mainly analyzing the meanings of ‘poetics of the whole body’, determining the significance of the political nature and modernity, or reviewing the literary and social values. In spite of ongoing studies, his essay on poetry still remains as a convoluted text. It is because of the difficulties in reading and interpreting of Kim Soo-Young’s text due to the complicated contexts and his unique unkind discussing style. With a critical thinking on the issue, this study attempts to solve convoluted text of the essay using rhetorical methods and explores the unique discussing style of Kim Soo-Young. And proved that Kim Soo-Young’s unique rhetoric appeared on this poetics under the influence of T. S. Eliot. The central feature of the essay is that 13 paragraphs intersect to form two structures of ‘the poetics for poets’ and ‘the poetics for poetry’. These two structures maintain a counterpoint relationship and construct the whole as ‘the existence of poetry as the power’. Kim Soo-Young’s unique discussing style starts from ‘1:1’, expressed in the process of working out the meaning of prose, to ‘1:5’ where the unique polyphonic variations are more saliently demonstrated. The counterpoint combination initiating from ‘prose = adventure’ eventually becomes ‘prose = chaos’ through the process of undergoing 5 phases. To schematize the process, a unique chain of rhetoric is produced as ‘prose → adventure → expressing the world → freedom → love → chaos’. Considering the two structures of the essay which develop each paragraph in counterpoint and the central thesis, the rhetoric used by Kim Soo-Young can be referred as ‘the counterpoint rhetoric’.

지금까지 「시여, 침을 뱉어라」에 대한 연구는 이 시론이 지닌 의미를 밝히거나 문학적·사회적 가치를 고찰하는 것이 대종을 이루었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 시론이 여전히 난해한 텍스트로 남아 있다는 사실 또한 부인하기 어렵다. 복잡 한 문맥과 김수영 특유의 불친절한 논증 스타일 때문에 독해가 쉽지 않다는 이유 때문이었다. 그렇지만 선행 연구들은 이 시론에 덧씌워진 난해함과 김수영의 불친절한 논증 스타일만 문제 삼았을 뿐, 이 시론에 나타난 수사학적 특징은 주목하지 않았다. 본고는 이러한 문제의식에 착안해 선행 연구자들이 시도하지 않았던 수사학적 방법으로 「시여, 침을 뱉어라」를 다시 읽고, 이 시론에 나타난 김 수영 특유의 논증 방식이 엘리엇과의 영향관계 속에서 성립한 것임을 밝혀냈다. 아울러 김수영과 엘리엇의 영향관계, 그리고 김수영과 음악의 관계를 규명한 것 또한 본고의 성과라 하겠다. 13개의 단락으로 이루어진 이 시론은 각각의 단락들이 교차하면서 ‘시인을 위 한 시론’과 ‘시를 위한 시론’이라는 두 개의 구조를 형성하고 있다. 이 두 개의 구조는 마치 이질적인 두 개의 주제가 결합되듯 대위적인 관계를 유지하면서 이 시론의 전체를 이루고 있다. 그리고 이 시론에 구현된 김수영 특유의 논증 스타일은 시를 논한다는 것, 즉 김수영이 산문의 의미를 밝히는 과정에서 구사하는 ‘1:1’에서 시작해 ‘1:5’까지 진행되는 독특한 다성부적 변주를 통해 더욱 뚜렷하게 드러난다. ‘산문 = 모험’에서 시작된 대위적인 결합은 다섯 단계를 거치면서 마침내 ‘산문 = 혼란’이 되는데, 그 과정을 도식화하면 ‘산문→모험→세계의 개 진→자유→사랑→혼란’이라는 독특한 수사의 연쇄 고리가 만들어진다. 그러므로 이 시론이 각각의 단락을 대위시키면서 만들어내는 시론의 두 층위, 그리고 핵심적인 논제를 밝히는 과정에서 김수영이 구사하는 수사학은 그런 측면에서 대 위법적 수사학이라 명명할 수 있다. 또 하나 주목할 것은 이 시론에 구현된 수사학적 특징은 김수영의 시작법적 특징이기도 하다는 점이다. 이는 김수영이 이 시론의 서두에서 밝힌 명제처럼 “시인은 시를 논하게 될 때에도 시를 쓰듯이 논해야 한다.”라는, 스스로 제시한 목표에 부합하는 것이다.
