In this paper some aspects of Bakhtin's theory considered relevant to the understanding of what discourse genres are and how this understanding can be used for more meaningful language teaching are presented. Research in the area is briefly discussed. It is argued that the use of teaching units that originate from a relevant topic and discuss different genres related to it, questioning its language and discourse characteristics, is a possible way to create conditions so that the students can expand their participation in social practices in which they already operate or wish to participate.

En este artículo son presentados algunos aspectos de la teoría de Bakhtin considerados relevantes para la comprensión de que son los géneros discursivos y cómo este conocimiento puede ser utilizado para un trabajo más significativo en la enseñanza de lenguas. Después son analizadas brevemente algunas investigaciones en el área. Luego, se argumenta que el uso de unidades didácticas que parten de un tema relevante y discuten diferentes géneros relacionados, cuestionando su lenguaje y las características del discurso, es una manera de crear condiciones para que los estudiantes puedan ampliar su participación en las prácticas sociales que ya operan o en que deseen participar.
