This study aims to analyze the visions of Edenic paradise that the Europeans of the 16th century had about the New World, and his violent and savage ideology of domination of that continent. Therefore, this study took as its main objects the A Carta of Pero Vaz de Caminha and the Tratado da terra do Brasil of Gândavo. By the observation of these two documents, it is clear that the Great Geographical Discovery of Europeans toward to the India and the New World and its search for the Garden of Eden in the East are closely related. Since ancient times, Europeans believed that gold, pearls and spices were products from the Garden of Eden. But the Garden that they located in the New World, was brutally raped by them and so, the New World was dominated. That is, the Eden was for them just an El Dorado where there was no faith, no king, no law. Thus, their domination was justified and their ideology was based on the othering and Catholic Enlightenment, which in our view, was another form of violence.

Este estudo visa analisar as visões do paraíso edênico que os europeus do século 16 tinham do Novo Mundo, e a sua ideologia violenta e selvagem de dominação deste continente. Para tanto, o presente trabalho tomou como principais matérias A Carta de Pero Vaz de Caminha e o Tratado da Terra do Brasil de Gândavo. Na observação destes dois documentos, percebe-se que o Grande Descobrimento Marítimo dos europeus rumo à Índia e ao Novo Mundo e a sua busca de Jardim do Éden no Oriente se relacionam intimamente. Desde a Antiguidade, os europeus acreditavam que o ouro, as pérolas e as especiarias eram produtos oriundos do Jardim do Éden. Mas esse Jardim, que achavam que localizaram no Novo Mundo, foi violentado barbaramente pelos europeus e assim, o Novo Mundo foi dominado. Isto é, o Éden era para eles apenas um eldorado onde não havia nem fé, nem rei, nem lei. Sendo assim, foi justificada a sua dominação cuja ideologia baseava-se na alterização e no iluminismo católico, o que a nosso ver, era uma outra forma de violência.
