World Bank’s Education for the Knowledge Economy(EKE) programme with developing countries is to cultivate highly skilled, flexible human capital needed to compete in global markets. The World Bank acknowledges that this programme will normally affect a country’s entire education system. Consequently, what is the position of the Humanities and General Education in an EKE-focused higher education system?This paper will discuss Malaysia’s knowledge-based economy initiative, specifically programmes aimed at creating a strong human capital base through an education system that imparts higher-level skills to undergraduates. This system, based on the World Bank’s blueprint, is meant to foster work place skills and specialised education. However, it is argued that the implementation of this education system is at the expense of the Humanities and General Education. An assessment is presented in this paper on the future of the Humanities and General Education in Malaysia, a country that is highly focused on the contribution of specialised education (in science and technology) in its agenda for a developed nation status.

세계은행(World Bank)에서 주도하는 지식경제를 위한 교육(Education for the Knowledge Economy; EKE) 프로그램은 세계시장에서 경쟁력을 갖춘 고도로 숙련되고 유연한 인적자원을 양성하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 세계은행은 이 프로그램이 개발도상국가의 교육시스템 전반에 영향을 미칠 것으로 생각한다. 그렇다면 EKE 프로그램에 초점을 맞춘 고등교육 시스템에서 인문학과 교양교육은 어떤 지위를 갖는가? 본 논문은 숙련된 기술력을 갖춘 인적자원을 양산할 수 있도록 하는 강력한 교육프로그램을 중심으로 하는 말레이시아의 지식기반 경제정책에 대해 비판적으로 검토한다. 세계은행계획서(World Bank’s blueprint)에 기초한 이 정책은 직업현장에 필요한 전문교육을 촉진하는 것이다. 그러나 이러한 정책은 대학에서의 인문학과 교양교육의 희생을 전제로 하는 것으로 논란이 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 국가의 경제적 발전을 위해 과학과 기술 중심의 직업교육이 강조되는 말레이시아의 교육현실에서 인문학과 교양교육의 미래에 대해 분석하고 평가한다.
