Engineering students are to learn disciplinary writing course due to the curriculum for ABEEK. Many problems are reported with regard to teaching the writing courses for engineering students. First, what the disciplinary writing is studied. After discussing the characteristics of engineering, engineering design, and both engineering students and engineers in terms of writing education, the course objectives and contents are suggested. The features of technical writing helpful for developing the engineering writing course are summarized while the weakness of science writing in terms of teaching the engineering writing is noted. Then, the way of teaching the engineering writing in parallel with the engineering design course is discussed. In conclusion, the engineering writing should be taught so that students are able to deal with writing tasks while taking the Capstone Design course during the senior year.

공학교육인증제도의 시행으로 인해 공과대학 학생들은 기초글쓰기를 배운 후 전공글쓰기를 배우는데, 그 과목이 여러 면에서 부실하다는 지적이 많다. 전공글쓰기는 어떤 과목이어야 하는지에 대해 조사한 후, 글쓰기 교육의 관점에서 공학, 설계 및 공대생과 엔지니어의 특성들을 살펴서 공학글쓰기의 교육목표와 내용을 제시하고, 공학글쓰기 교육에 참고할 technical writing의 특성을 요약하며, 특히 공학글쓰기 관점에서 science writing의 문제점을 지적한 뒤, 공학글쓰기를 공학설계와 병행하여 가르치는 데 대해 토의하였다. 공학글쓰기는 캡스톤디자인을 이수하는 데 필요한 글말 의사소통 수요를 감당할 수 있는 기량을 기르는 것을 목표로 한다.
