This dissertation is the paper to compare and analyze between Yongseong and Hanam who were prominent as high priests in the recent times. So far, the studies on high priests, great buddhist monks in the recent times have been done by Buddhist clans. As the result, there were lots of problems, excessive affinity, overpraise, biased understanding and conclusion etc. So, it is important to throughly acknowledge the problems for academic, objective evaluation on high priests in the recent times. After then, to find out its improvement measures will be the next. This dissertation was written with, such like premises and woes. I expect that same, different or individual characteristics would be shown, if comparing and analyzing high priests. I think that, when I come close to high priests with duplex, multiphasic point of views, a new research prospect will be shown. And I suggest to interpret the study on high priest with historical context and point of view at that time taking away the interpretations of superiority, monopoly, and exaggeration. In this point, I divided Yongseong and Hanam into practice, education, buddhist business, social activity, religious order activity, and idea succession etc. As the result, Yongseong and Hanam had similar practices and thoughts under the premise they set Buddhism as the standard to recognize life and the world. But in the social activity for people and nation, Yongseong went on aggressive performance, but Hanam preferred seclusive walking. Such a difference came from the source of two high priests' disparate images. That is, they considered Buddhism as truth, but when it comes to realization of truth, Yongseong was with social activities, Hanam was with seclusive practice to realize their identities.

본 고찰은 근대기 고승으로 명망이 높은 용성과 한암을 비교 분석한 논고 이다. 지금껏 근대 고승, 큰스님에 대한 연구는 문중 중심으로 이루어졌다. 그 결과 연구 추동, 자료 발굴 등의 긍정성도 있었지만 지나친 우호성, 과찬, 편파적 이해, 단정 등 많은 문제점이 드러났다. 때문에 근대기 고승에 대한 학문적, 객관적 평가를 하기 위해서는 그 문제점을 철저히 인식하는 것이 중 요하다. 그 연후에 그 개선책을 모색하는 것이 순서라 하겠다. 이 글은 이와 같은 전제, 고민하에서 작성되었다. 고승을 비교하여 분석을 하면 그 같고, 다름 혹은 개별적인 특성이 드러날 것으로 기대된다. 고승을 이중적, 다면적인 관점으로 접근하고 그를 역사적 맥락으로 이해할 때에 새 로운 연구 지평이 나타날 것이다. 그리고 필자는 고승연구를 우열, 독점, 과 장의 해석을 버리고 당시의 역사적 맥락과 관점으로 해석하기를 제언한다. 이런 차원에서 필자는 용성과 한암을 수행, 교육, 불교사업, 사회활동, 종단 활동, 사상 계승 등으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과 용성과 한암은 수행과 사상은 유사했지만, 사회⋅국가를 위한 사회활동에서 용성은 적극적 행보를 갔지만 한암은 은둔적 행보를 갔다. 이 같은 차별성은 두 고승의 이질적인 이미지의 연원이다. 즉 이들은 불교를 진리라 여겼지만, 진리 구현에서는 용 성은 사회활동을 통해, 한암은 은둔수행을 통해 자기 정체성을 구현했다.
