Yi Jeong (1512~1571) was a person who made a great contribution towards growing Neo-Confucianism of Yi Dynasty in the sixteenth century. He volunteered for a local governor. He, as a local governor, made every effort to stimulate the growth of Neo-Confucianism through establishing private academies (seoweon) and publishing books related to Neo-Confucianism. Magistrate of Suncheon County was a final post of his being in government service. Also he was then in the first half of his fifties, a mature age in his study and ability with experience. This article tried to look back upon the trace of Yi Jeong’s work in his time of being Magistrate of Suncheon County. The goal of this article was to find (in relation with the Suncheon community) the meaning of the fact that he paid special attention to stimulate the growth of Neo-Confucianism. Yi Jeong, who arrived in Suncheon County as Magistrate, established Okcheon Academy (Okcheon seoweon) as a center of the Neo-Confucian literati (sarim). He published six kinds of Neo-Confucian books. These efforts were greatly affected by Yi Hwang who was the foremost Korean Confucianist philosopher of his age. In addition, the cooperation and participation of local Neo-Confucian literati like Gi Daeseung also played an important role. In order to keep away from the central government, ruled by the meritorious elite, Yi Jeong volunteered to be a local governor – the Magistrate of Suncheon County. He made every effort to stimulate the growth of Neo-Confucianism in every place he traveled as Magistrate. He expected that the Joseon society would advance to an ideal society in which the politics under the rule of the meritorious elite would be overcome and moral politics would be realized. While Yi Jeong established Okcheon Academy and published six kinds of Neo-Confucian books, the Neo-Confucian order gradually took its place in Suncheon district. The growth of the Neo-Confucian literati in Suncheon County was a sign. With the stimulation to grow Neo-Confucianism by Yi Jeong, the Neo-Confucian literati in Suncheon County continuously developed through overcoming and absorbing the traditional yangban literati. Therefore, the Neo-Confucian literati in Suncheon County took an important position leading the Suncheon community while coping with the Japanese invasion of 1592.

龜巖 李楨(1512~1571)은 16세기 조선 성리학의 성장에 크게 이바지한 인물이었다. 그는 늘 외관 부임을 자청하였다. 그리고 지방에 나가서는 서원을 창건하고 성리학 서적을 간행하는 등 성리학을 진흥하고자 애를 썼다. 순천부사는 그가 재임한 최종 관직이었다. 더불어 당시 그는 50대 전반기로서 그 학문이나 경륜의 면에서 무르익은 경지에 접어든 인생의 원숙기였다. 이정의 생애에서 순천부사 시절이 각별함을 이해할 수가 있거니와, 그리하여 순천부사 시절의 활동을 더듬어 오랜 外官 守令으로서의 치적을 되새기며, 더욱이 성리학 진흥에 열성을 기울인 의미를 순천 지역사회와의 관계 속에서 헤아리는 게 이 글의 목표이다. 순천에 부임한 이정은 玉川書院을 건립하여 士林의 구심으로 삼았으며, 『景賢錄』과 『性理遺編』을 찬집해서 印刊하는 등 모두 6종의 성리학 관련 서적을 출간하였다. 그와 같은 활동에는 魚得江·宋麟壽와 周世鵬, 특히 李滉의 영향이 지대하였다. 아울러 奇大升을 비롯하여 昇平四隱과 같은 향중 士類의 적극적인 호응과 참여도 중요한 역할을 하였다. 李楨은 훈척 위주의 중앙정치에 비판적이었다. 그가 외관을 자청하여 즐겨 지방으로 나간 것은, 그러한 중앙과 거리를 두려는 의도에서였다. 그리하여 수령으로 부임한 고을에서마다 성리학 진흥에 열과 성을 다함으로써, 훈척정치를 점진적으로 극복하여 도학정치가 구현되는 이상사회로 나아가고자 노력하였다. 말하자면 李楨이 서원을 창건하고 서적을 편찬 간행하며 성리학 진흥에 나선 데에는, 훈척이 발호하는 중앙정치를 비판하는 의미가 담겨 있었던 셈이다. 순천에서도 또한 그러하기는 매한가지였다. 나아가 그의 학문과 경륜이 한층 빛을 발하는 만년의 원숙기였다는 점에서, 그 의미는 한층 각별하였다. 이정이 옥천서원을 건립하고 성리학 서적을 편찬 간행하여 보급하는 사이, 순천지역에서는 차츰 성리학적인 질서가 자리를 잡아갔다. 순천사림의 성장과 같은 게 그러한 징표였다. 김굉필의 감화 속에 태동기를 보낸 순천의 사림은, 이정의 성리학 진흥을 하나의 계기로 삼아 구래의 사족을 극복 흡수하며 성장을 거듭하였다. 그리하여 임진왜란을 거치면서 마침내 지역사회를 이끄는 핵심으로 자리를 잡기에 이르렀다. 성리학적인 질서를 정착시켜 도학정치가 실현될 토대를 구축하고자 애쓰던 순천부사 이정의 노력이, 순천사림의 성장으로 이어져 그러한 결과를 이룩해낸 것이었다.
