This study aimed to analyze of the manner in which textuality is achieved in Honbul by focusing on linguistic aspects of the narrative text. In the case of Honbul, textual concepts cannot be straightforwardly applied as conditions of the text, because the text is composed of multiple layers of discourse and semantic mapping. Thus, this study aimed to show how concepts of textuality from narrative theories can provide an alternative frame of discussion. Within this frame, aspects of focalization require attention, as this is the key mechanism involved in the discourse dynamics of Honbul. Therefore, this study analyzed aspects of focalization and discussed the semantic mapping and the effects of the textuality in Honbul. The analysis showed that different situations can be recognized within each layer of meaning due to the connections between focalized characters and the focalization of the implied author. These recognized situations become concretized by means of two aspects of ‘entwurf’, namely the spatialization of place and the spatialization of time, which function to plan space in a situation of placelessness. Based on the dynamic composition of focalization, Honbul establishes a semantic mapping associated with the symbol called ‘Land’, while expanding the semantic layers of meaning within the narrative. This reveals that the textuality of Honbul is itself a multi-layered and complex entity, formed by establishing a reciprocal relationship between outer layers of language and the inner layer of text.

본고는 서사 텍스트의 언어 운용 국면에 초점을 맞춰,『혼불』의 텍스트성 형성 지점을 분석하는 데 목적을 둔다. 『혼불』논의에 있어 텍스트성 개념은 단순히 텍스트의 성립 조건들로 적용될 수 없다. 『혼불』의 서사와 그 의미망을 구축하는 담화 양상은 다수의 결로 직조되는 까닭이다. 따라서 본고는 서사론 차원의 텍스트성 개념을 대안적 틀로 제안한다. 이로부터 『혼불』의 담화 역학에 관여하는 핵심적 기제인 초점화 측면을 논의할 필요가 있다. 본고는 초점화의 복합적 양상을 분석하고, 도출되는 텍스트성의 의미망 및 효과를 논구한다. 이에 따르면 『혼불』의 서사는 인물 초점화와 내포작가 초점화의 결절 지점을 통해 각 층위에서 지각되는 인식 국면을 달리한다. 이 인식 국면은 장소상실의 상황에서 공간을 기획하고자 하는 ‘기투’의 두 양상: 장소의 공간화와 시간의 공간화로 분할되어 그 특유의 서사 전략을 구체화한다. 이러한 초점화의 역동적 구성을 바탕으로 『혼불』은 ‘땅’이라는 표상에 결부되는 공간적 의미망을 구축하며, 서사의 의미론적 지층을 확장하고 있다. 이는 『혼불』의 텍스트성이 텍스트내적․텍스트외적 층위의 자장에서 언어의 적층과 교호 관계의 구축을 통해 구성되는 중층적 복합체임을 드러낸다.
