This study was undertaken to identify effective methods for improving the quality of the Traditional Korean Culture course offered at Namseoul University; specifically, the quality of the video materials used for teaching the course was examined. Interest at the university level in courses related to culture has increased because culture has been in the spotlight as the 21st century’s new paradigm. However, cultural studies have decreased and are viewed as less important than the employment rate at universities. The course “Understanding of Traditional Korean Culture” is no exception to this trend. Fortunately, the course’s total lesson time numbers are maintained even though total classes have decreased, because it makes an effort to attract students by understanding their view of the course and using video materials actively. Controlling the time factor and selections options among hundreds of video materials related to “traditional Korean culture” has become important. Currently, a total of 14 videos are used each semester at Namseoul University. It takes 20–40 minutes with an explanation regarding the first week’s video—The Ritual Ceremony—to the last week’s video lesson, Hahoe Pyolshin-Gut Tal Nori'. Video materials are the best tools for cultural studies based on the diversity of students; thus, limitations associated with lecture-centered classes and field studies are overcome. Although video materials for the Understanding of Traditional Korean Culture course are continuously created and updated, there are still problems such as poor video quality, inadequate composition of content, and Internet congestion. However, the importance of using video materials for this course is the ability to highlight certain aspects of Korean culture and connect people beyond regions and generations.

본 논문은 현재 남서울대학교에서 이루어지고 있는 ‘한국 전통문화의 이해’ 강좌를 대상으로 동영상자료를 활용하여 보다 효과적으로 강의를 진행하기 위한 방안을 모색하기 위해 시도되는 것이다. 문화가 21세기의 새로운 패러다임으로 부상하면서 대학에서 이루어지는 문화관련 교과목에 대한 관심 또한 높게 나타나고 있다. 그러나 학생들의 호응도와는 다르게 대학에서는 취업률을 앞세워 교양과목을 대폭 축소하는 상황이 벌어지고 있다. 이러한 흐름은 ‘한국 전통문화의 이해’ 강좌에도 예외 없이 적용되었는데, 그나마 다행인 것은 전체적인 분반 숫자는 줄었지만 총 시수는 변하지 않았다는 점이다. 이러한 결과는 학생들의 수업에 대한 경향을 능동적으로 파악하고 동영상자료 등을 통해 관심을 적극적으로 유발시켜 교과목의 중요성을 인식시켰기 때문이다. 현재 ‘한국 전통문화의 이해’ 수업에 활용할 수 있는 동영상자료는 수 백편이 존재하는데, 이를 모두 활용하기에는 한계가 있다. 그러므로 수업 내용에 가장 부합되는 동영상을 선택하는 것이 중요하다. 동영상자료는 선택과 시간 조절이 관건이라고 할 수 있는데, 현재 남서울대에서 한 학기 동안 활용되는 동영상은 총 14편이다. 첫 주 제례동영상부터 종강이 이루어지는 14주차 하회별신굿탈놀이까지 매주 20분에서 40분 정도의 시간을 할애해 보여주면서 설명을 곁들이고 있다. 동영상자료는 참여 인원의 다양성에 기초한 교양 선택과목이 직면한 체험학습을 할 수 없는 상황과 설명위주의 획일적인 수업을 극복할 수 있는 최선의 대안이라고 할 수 있다. ‘한국 전통문화의 이해’ 수업에 활용되는 동영상자료는 많은 발전을 거듭해 오고 있지만 아직도 화질과 내용의 구성, 인터넷 끊김 등 해결해야할 문제들이 상존한다. 그러나 전통문화가 지역과 세대를 뛰어넘어 많은 사람들을 하나로 엮어주는 콘텐츠로 부상하고 있다는 점에서 전통문화를 소재로 한 동영상 또한 중요성이 더 부각될 것으로 전망된다.
