In this paper, I present a general survey of pragmatic studies in the field of linguistics, and offer predictions for the prospects of pragmatics in Korean linguistics. Pragmatics entails the study of language (=utterances) as it is used, and Morris (1938) refers to the relationship between signs and the interpreter(s) of the signs. The history of pragmatics can be divided into the period of classical pragmatics and that of modern pragmatic theories. In the period of classical pragmatics, the main topics of study were related to the problem of deciding the intended meaning of an utterance while identifying other meanings also conveyed by the utterance. The former entails determining the referents of referring expressions and presuppositions, whereas the latter entails identifying speech acts and implicatures. Modern pragmatic theorists can be regarded as neo-Gricean, in that they follow the ideas proposed by Grice. Such theorists have a number of characteristics in common: (i) they distinguish what is said from what is implied, (ii) they assume the existence of rules and principles derived from a general principle governing human communication, and (iii) they utilize the concept of communicative intention. However, these theorists can be separated into three different groups according to their interests and points of emphasis: philosophers, linguists, and cognitive pragmatists (relevance theorists). Following from the above description of the field of pragmatics, the range of research topics and methods is extensive, covering politeness, meta-pragmatics, structuring supra-sentential units, interaction pragmatics, micro and macro pragmatics, etc. Coarse outlines of pragmatics courses tend to cover such topics, based on the basic concepts of pragmatics, and are, above all, concerned with language use data. Despite research in linguistics giving priority to constant aspects of languages like grammar, lexicon, meaning, etc., the recent need for an understanding of communicative principles is increasingly demanding research on language use. I am certain that the methods employed in linguistic research will include those of pragmatics in the near future.

화용론은 사용된 언어에 대한 연구로, 언어 기호들 사이의 관계를 다루는 통사론이나, 기호와 대상 사이의 관계, 즉 기호의 고유한 지칭 의미를 다루는 의미론과는 달리 기호가 화자를 중심으로 한 맥락 속에서 청자에 의해 어떻게 해석될 수 있는가 하는, 기호의 비교적 일시적인 의미를 다루는 분야이다. 따라서 화용론은 어쩌면 언어의 실제 해석을 다루는 매우 실용적이고 외연이 넓은 분야이다. 화용론의 주요 주제는 ‘말한 것’의 의미에 대한 연구와 말한 것 이상의 의미에 대한 연구로 구분할 수 있고, 말한 것의 의미를 결정하는 문제는 지칭, 전제, 말한 것 이상의 의미를 결정하는 문제는 화행, 함축을 다루어 왔고, 따라서 이것들이 고전 화용론의 핵심 연구 대상이라 할 수 있다. 현대 화용론은 대체로 그라이스의 협조의 원리를 계승하고 있지만 관심의 차이에 따라 ‘말한 것’에 대한 철학적 구분에 집중하는 학자들, 문법과 화용 기능 사이의 상호작용에 관심을 두는 학자들, 발화 해석에 대한 경험 심리학적 설명에 관심을 두는 학자들로 나뉘며, 이와 더불어 의사소통의 두 차원이라고 할 수 있는 기호-해독 모형에 중점을 두는 경향과 의도-인식 모형에 중점을 두는 경향에 따라 구분될 수 있다. 화용론의 연구 범위는 사용된 의미라는 드넓은 외연과 더불어 기능, 형식, 참여자, 맥락의 차원, 매체, 제도화 여부, 관심 영역 등 다양한 요인에 따라 세분화될 수 있을 것인데, 여기서는 공손성, 메타-화용론, 초문장 단위의 구조화 문제, 상호작용 화용론, 미시화용론과 거시화용론으로 주제를 구분하여 연구방법과 관심 등에 대해 소개하였다.
