Since 1863 and up to the October Revolution for more than 50 years Korean immigrants recorded their history in tsarist Russia. In order to fix as russian subject and to strengthen their position Koreans should solve the urgent problem to prepare the foundation of life as like learning russian language, adapting the new system in faith and education of territory in which they live. Russian Orthodox Church for the first Korean immigrants was not just a form of christian faith that preached to the citizens, for them, of the new country. Orthodoxy was for Korean immigrants more the way to solve the problem of ‘living’ in the new territory than the way to ‘the truth’. Furthermore, to the Koreans the church was “a ray of light” in the darkness of illiteracy: it gave them the opportunity to learn the Russian language. In fact, to Koreans ‘the truth and the light’ of Orthodoxy were not separated from each other. Strictly speaking, Christianity was the only way to secure the migrants on Russian soil. For korean immigrants being a member of orthodox church had a practical significance in the process of adaptation in the Russian territory: through it they could learn the Russian language, be included in the system of Russian ecclesiastical education, and, in addition, show themselves as loyal subjects of the state and the church. In this article we have focused on the Korean community of immigrants and the elementary school under the control of Russian Orthodox Church. The topics on education had a close relationship with the ‘russification’ policy of korean migrants, so they can be accessed in the context of domestic policy. In the korean studies on educational issues in korean immigrant communities in Far East, the topic of parish schools had received little attention comparing with the korean ethnic schools. Our goal is to consider the process of acculturation of korean communities in tsarist Russia through questions on church parish schools - who founded them, how to change their number, what was the reaction from the Korean and Russian leaders and so on.
