본 논문은 <김원전> <금방울전> <홍길동전> <최고운전>을 대상으로 지하국 대적 퇴치담의 수용 양상과 의미를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 네 작품에는 공통적으로 지하국 대적 퇴치담이 수용되어 있는데 <김원전>은 작품 전체가 지하국 대적 퇴치담으로 전개되며 <금방울전>은 중반부부터 끝까지, <홍길동전>과 <최고운전>은 각각 중반부와 서두에 지하국 대적 퇴치담이 수용되어 있다. 그런데 <홍길동전> <최고운전>과 달리 <김원전>과 <금방울전>에서는 공통적으로 무사가 여인을 납치하는 내용이 반복되며 <김원전>에서는 무사가 대적과 대결하는 내용이, <금방울전>에서는 무사가 여인과 혼인하는 내용이 반복된다. 이처럼 네 작품에 수용된 지하국 대적 퇴치담의 범주가 상이한 것처럼 수용 양상 또한 상이하다. 지하국 대적 퇴치담이 <김원전>에서는 귀족적 영웅의 신분 상승의 서사로, <금방울전>에서는 여성의 희생에 의한 남성의 신분 상승의 서사로, <홍길동전>에서는 서얼의 가부장권의 형성 서사로, <최고운전>에서는 가부장 최충에 대한 비판의 서사로 변용되어 수용되어 있기 때문이다. 이로 인해 지하국 대적 퇴치담의 대중성은 입증된다. 하지만 지하국 대적 퇴치담은 소설 속에 수용되는 과정에서 민담 고유의 민중성은 점차 감소되는데 이러한 면모는 소설에서 지하국 대적 퇴치담의 범주가 차지하는 비중이 클수록 두드러진다. 작품 전체가 지하국 대적 퇴치담으로 구성된 <김원전>에서는 민중성은 상실되어 있고 귀족적 성향만이 드러나는 것으로 확인되기 때문이다.
