The paper discussed the issue awareness of ImJin War from oral community by looking into 51 pieces of folktale about SeoAe in Hangukgubimunhakdaekye(韓國口碑文學大系; Complete works of Korean Oral Literature). SeoAe folktale is related to ImJin War and there are several types of it:ImJin war focused type of tale with the story about fighting against Japanese before ImJin War and story about asking for a dispatch of troops of Li Rusong; SeoAe and GyeomAm brothers' outstanding ability focused type of tale; and Birth of SeoAe and GyeomAm brothers focused type of tale related to especialness of motherhood and geomantic areas where unique groups of people were born including grandparents' houses in SeoAe. The awareness of the issues regarding ImJin War from oral community shown in SeoAe related tales were examined through the understanding and content analysis of the character formalization. Among the SeoAe related lore, SeoAe is negatively recognized as duty of politicians in the tales about ImJin War and this negative perception came from critical awareness of oral community that politicians did not complete their duty properly during national crisis, ImJin War. The oral transmitter's awareness issues extracted from SeoAe related tales can be summarized in four: 'Did people know about ImJin war beforehand and was there a preparation'; 'What was the plan for Japanese invading forces'; 'Did people handle well from tyranny of Ming Dynasty after the war'; and 'Was contribution of people who fought against Japanese invading forces properly evaluated'. These awareness issues are criticisms of politicians' state, hence can be understood as expressions that reflect oral community's perception and desire of history such as 'what if people prepared for the war in advance', 'what if we withdraw Japanese by ourselves without depending on the power of a foreign country', 'what if people's contribution were fairly evaluated' and etc.

본 논문에서는 󰡔한국구비문학대계󰡕에 실려 있는 서애 관련 구비설화 51편을 대상으로 설화에 나타난 구술 공동체의 임진왜란에 대한 문제의식에 대해 고찰하였다. 서애설화는 임진왜란이 일어나기 전 왜장을 퇴치하는 이야기와 임진왜란이 일어난 후 이여송을 청병하는 이야기의 임진왜란을 중심으로 한 설화, 서애와 겸암 형제의 이인됨과 출중한 능력에 대한 설화, 어머니의 특별함과 서애의 외갓집을 비롯한 이인이 탄생하는 지역의 풍수와 연관된, 서애와 겸암 형제의 탄생에 초점을 맞춘 설화가 있는데, 임진왜란과의 관련성 아래 이야기되고 있다. 서애설화에 나타난 구술 공동체의 임진왜란에 대한 문제의식은 인물 형상화에 대한 이해와 내용분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 서애설화 중 임진왜란 관련 설화에서 서애는 위정자라는 직분으로써 형상화되어 부정적으로 인식되고 있는데, 이러한 부정적 시각은 임진왜란이라는 국가적 위기 상황에서 위정자들이 그 직분을 제대로 해내지 못했다는 구술 공동체의 비판적 의식에서 비롯된 것이라고 할 수 있다. 서애설화를 통해 추출될 수 있는 임진왜란에 대한 구술 전승자들의 문제의식은 ‘임진왜란이 일어날 것에 대해 미리 알고 대비책이 있었는가’, ‘왜의 침략세력을 몰아낼 방책이 무엇인가’, ‘전쟁 후 명의 횡포에 제대로 대처하였는가’, ‘침략세력을 물리친 자들에 대한 공이 제대로 평가 되었는가’의 네 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 이러한 문제의식은 위정자들의 실정에 대한 비판으로써 만약에 전쟁에 미리 대비했었다면, 외세를 빌리지 않고 우리가 그들을 몰아냈다면, 공을 세운 이들에 대한 평가가 공정하게 이루어졌다면 등 역사에 대한 구술 공동체의 의식과 바람이 반영되어 표출된 것으로 이해할 수 있다.
