There is not enough study on women prisoners compared to men prisoners. It was because the women prisoners are fewer than the men prisoners and people cognized their crimes are a minor infringements. Also the cause of women crime was mainly perceived as biological or psychological factors so a treatment of correction welfare is not provided sufficiently. However, the number of women’s crime is increasing and their crime is noy just from biological or psychological problems. The women commit a crime by a social structural factors. Therefore it needs to analyze the current situation of women prisoners, and the correction welfare for women prisoners should be extended. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current situation of women prisoners, and to suggest a task of the correctional welfare for women prisoners. The result of analysis is the current situation of women prisoners are limited to live stable when they were released from prison. Therefore this study suggests some tasks for the correction welfare related to women prisoners. First, it is necessary to conduct a current situation of women prisoners closely. Second, it is necessary to extend the programs about the family or children. Third, it needs to extend the support to the women prisoners’ children. Fourth, the private organizations need to increase the interest about women prisoners. It is expected that the result of this study would contribute to expanding the understandings of women prisoners and offer some implications for correctional welfare to ensure the social safety.

여성 수용자에 대한 연구는 남성 수용자들에 비해 상대적으로 많지 않다. 여성 범죄자가 남성 범죄자에 비해 그 수가 적으며 범죄의 죄질도 그다지 심각하지 않다고 인식되었기 때문이다. 여성 범죄의 원인에 대해서도 주로 생물학적, 심리학적 측면에서만 찾으려고 했기 때문에 여성 수용자에 대한 교정복지적 처우에 대해서 소홀해 왔다. 그러나 여성 범죄는 점차 증가하고 있으며 범죄의 원인도 생물학적이고 심리학적인 원인 외에 사회구조적인 영향에 의해서 일어나는 경우가 많으므로 여성 범죄의 현황을 정확히 파악하고 여성 수용자에 대한 교정복지를 확대ㆍ실시해야 한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 여성 수용자에 대한 교정복지 현황을 파악하고 여성의 특성을 반영한 앞으로의 교정복지 과제를 제시하고자 하였다. 먼저 여성 수용자에 대한 교정복지 현황을 살펴보았으며 그 결과 현재 실시되고 있는 교정복지 제도들이 여성 수용자들을 출소 후 성공적으로 사회에 복귀시키는데 한계가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 이러한 결과를 토대로 여성 수용자들을 위한 교정복지의 과제로 다음을 제시하였다. 첫째, 여성 수용자들의 현재 상태를 정확하게 파악하는 것이 필요하다. 둘째, 가족 관계 증진을 위한 프로그램을 증설ㆍ운영해야 한다. 셋째, 여성 수용자들의 자녀에 대한 지원을 확대할 필요가 있다. 넷째, 여성 수용자들에 대한 민간단체의 관심과 노력이 증대되어야 한다. 본 연구는 이론적으로는 여성수용자에 대한 이해를 확장시키는 데 기여할 것이며 실천적으로는 이러한 이해를 기반으로 여성 수용자를 위한 교정복지 실천에도 시사점을 제공함으로써 사회의 안전에 기여할 것으로 본다.
