The purpose of this research is to search for basic ideas or philosophical bases of holistic education. Holistic education came from the cognitions of public school education’s problems regarding the division and separation of teaching systems. From the cognition, for helping students with their lives with school educations, it was determined that education must be applied to their lives, and knowledge educations for them must not be separated with the emotional and physical educations. From the bases of Wholistic Education, as the name means, it insists holism of education. But the research of how this insistence can be supported from the contemporary leading philosophy has never been there until now. I see the possibility of philosophical justification from the epistemological holism of pragmatism philosopher, Quine. He has rejected traditional mechanism and reductionism which are not conceded with the fluent of contemporary sciences. Nevertheless, contemporary philosophers, the Churchlands affirm intertheoretical reductionism, and contemporary biologist, Edward Wilson affirms reductionism and consilience. This study is searching how their affirmations are comprehended in detail. And also it critically reviews if the educating subjects being separated and educated at school have severe problems. Additionally, it examines how Quine’s view point is supported and appreciated newly on the basis of the Churchland’s Neurophilosophy. I am sure this study will make the educators of Wholistic Education rethink the aim of their work.

이 연구의 목적은 홀리스틱 교육(holistic education)의 기본 이념 혹은 철학적 기초를 비판적으로 탐색하려는 데에 있다. 홀리스틱 교육의 출발은 기본적으로 학교 교육에서 여러 교과목으로 분할된 교육 혹은 독립된 교과 편성의 문제점에 대한 인식에서 출발하였다. 학교에서 배운 것이 학생들에게 실제 삶에 도움이 되려면, 그것들이 실제 삶에 응용될 수 있어야 하며, 지식의 탐구와 정서적 혹은 신체적 교육이 분리되지 말아야 한다는 인식 때문이다. 이러한 배경에서 홀리스틱 교육은 그 명칭이 의미하듯 교육의 holism을 주장한다. 그렇지만 이제까지 홀리스틱 교육 내에서 이러한 주장이 유력한 현대 철학으로부터 어떻게 지지될 수 있는지 실질적으로 검토된 연구는 없었다. 이 연구자는 현대 실용주의 철학자 Quine의 인식론의 holism이 홀리스틱 교육에 대한 철학적 정당성을 마련해 줄 수 있음을 본다. Quine은 전통적 기계론과 환원주의의 관점이 현대 과학의 흐름과 부합하지 않는다는 측면에서 그것들에 반대한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 Quine을 계승하는 현대 철학자 The Churchlands는 이론 간 환원주의를 주장하며, 현대 생물학자 Wilson은 학문들 사이의 환원과 부합(consilience)을 주장한다. 이 연구는 이러한 주장들이 홀리스틱 교육의 철학적 배경에 어떤 인식론적 함축을 주는지 구체적으로 살펴본다. 나아가서 그들의 관점에 비추어 학교 교과목을 분할하여 편성하는 것에 심각한 문제가 있는지를 비판적으로 검토한다. 뿐만 아니라 Quine의 입장이 현대 신경철학의 배경에서 어떻게 지지되고 새롭게 이해되어야 할지를 살펴본다.
